Spring 2015 project: PLANT SUGGESTIONS

Right, I'm back! The craziness at work has calmed down somewhat, and I had a nice relaxing 4 day Easter weekend, with my mother who came up for a visit.

I started compiling all your suggestions into the first post of the thread, and as I research them they'll get get rejected (on the basis of availability, or price...) or will be kept.


Now, about stinker orchids, like the already suggsted Dendrobium cucumerinum... What are people's thoughts on potentially having a stinker as a project plant? In my case I'm open to try to new things, but if you had asked me a year ago when I still lived in my tiny little apartment, I wouldn't have wanted to have a stinky orchid in such a small space....

I don't mind stinkers, the dendrobium cucumerinum is not supposed to have a very strong scent, but I have seen reports on OB of spouses threatening to move out if stinker plants are not removed from the home. So if we're going to offer a stinker, maybe we should go with a two plant option, so that folks can opt in to either having the stinker plant, or not.

Or we say that mildly stinky orchids are fine, but not the true terrible stinkers (my boyfriend would also kick me out of the house, with the orchid, if it was really smelly).

I'd like to keep the project down to one plant if possible, and it's a shame if people back out because the odor is a deal breaker.

And I think Den cucumerinum is pretty cute, both the plant and the flowers!

I would say that if we let people know it is a stinker in the poll then they know what they are getting into. If it is a yes for the majority then they know it will be stinky.

I don't think we've ever had a project plant based on fragrance...interesting concept. Stinky / mild stinky ok with me.
I've had a dendrobium cucumerinum for several years and have never smelled anything.

No, I don't want a stinky one. My orchids live in my bedroom, which is also my sister's bedroom when she's home from college.

Maybe it could be okay if they ONLY bloom during the time frame where they could be outside in zone 6b. Or if the smell definitely isn't noticeable unless you put your face directly in it. I don't want to spend my hard-earned money on a plant and end up getting attached to it just to have everyone including myself complain about it.

I overheard your discussion on stinkers. How about a nicely scented bloom and when in bloom, compare the fragrance?

Sorry, no stinkers for me. I about gagged when Bulb. echinolabium bloomed. It was gifted away the next day.

No huge stinky ones for me either. I would go for a mild stinky one however. Perhaps we will have to vote on that one. I would hate to see people pull out because of it.
