well 2 reasons
- they take up space in the pot
- they didn't serve any useful purpose. I know that because I had a couple without peanuts and the seedlings/roots are fine
I think if you are careful with watering, then you don't need any "buffer". Actually, regarding the use of peanuts - the people I have spoken to are basically evenly split over use them or don't use them. I have decided not to use them and I didn't use them in the project deflask.

Hi all. Tomorrow is the orchid show set up so I am on vacation. I finally got around to deflasking my last one. Phal Luedde-violacea (violacea 'Magnificent' x lueddemanniana 'Woodlawn') from Orchidview.
I had the same flask as Jane. I used my soldering iron to melt it in half. These were so big that I potted most in 4" pots and the small ones in 2" pots.
My other seedlings are doing well in the sphag. I lost a few Phal tetraspis because I was stupid and left a grow light too close.

Yes, some are heavily mottled and others not, but they all came from the same flask. Maybe they will get spots later on.

Don't know about shils, but I have some paph seedlings which are getting more marked as they grow. Some had virtually none when they came out of flask. My guess is they'll always vary but they'll get more marks.

Out baggie today - been about 6 weeks. Weather is generally more humid so that should help. Still on heat mat.
No seedling losses, so far. Will probably start to fertilise from next watering. I am also thinking that the compot is too crowded and I am going to have to split them up after a few more weeks. I know these are bulbos, but anybody have any advice on when to repot ? I don't know if I should use 2in pots for the bigger seedings on next repot go-round.
