It does prefer to be dry imo as it has responded well to the dry/wet regime.
My previous plant always started to put out new roots in the late spring, after the bulb had finished flowering. It would then start to develop new pseudobulbs as well, which would plump up all summer, the leaves would elongate as well, but not unfold until very late in the fall or early in the winter. It was at that time that I would see the faint beginnings of buds, which would start to bloom around March or so...and the process would repeat itself.
I agree with the wet/dry regime; my plant grew better with a thorough soaking and time to dry out (though humidity was always 60% or so in the gh during the day so it was never totally dry...)

See you managed to resist the picta Camille! My confirmation says shipping the beginning of next week. Anyone know if Germany has a holiday on Monday (it's a bank holiday here in the UK)? Now I'm just going to be keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be in when the parcel arrives. Otherwise I might be having to pick it up from a depot, which I'm guessing means it might be in over next weekend! Eeek!

I'm not going to tell the full details of what I've ordered until it arrives... though I've left a few clues to some of it all over the board! LOL

PS: thanks for those giving culture tips: very interesting!

These don't bloom from sheaths like a lot of Cattleyas. The buds come out of the new developing leaf. The new leaf kind of acts like a sheath. The plants just finished flowering a few months ago, usually in the winter. So the pbulbs just finished maturing. They are now putting out new roots like you said, then they will put out new growths. Some bloom in fall but most in winter.

I don't think it's a day off in Germany. In the Netherlands tomorrow is a holiday (WWII liberation day) and in france Tuesday is a holiday (same reason).

Thumbs up Love the idea of having a TC for a box!!!!!

Hi Camille, I think that your idea of having a TC for another box in transit is such a good idea! My, why didn't I think of that. Oh, I know! It's because I am so new at this and just got the hang of a TC for a plant in the same box. Hmmmm....well, guess I am going to have to pay more attention to the posts from the European members. You folks are so much more advanced in the "orchid thinking"!

LOL, well I was desperate for an excuse! I think I spent a bit too much, but oh well.... I'll try to avoid buying more until summer! And next week I'll eat on the cheap to start to make up for it.

Default I think you were using your head!

Camille, I don't think you "overdid" anything. I think you were thinking of the orchids and their lonely travels and think of that box just being alone. My, my, you have a heart of gold. Next week, don't eat on the cheap. You deserve so much better, my friend. Think of those orchids that you saved from boredom on their travels. Celebrate!

Default A bulb is a bulb is a....pseudobulb?

I wondered about the term pseudo-bulb when I was looking at the sophie.

According to this definition

Pseudobulb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The pseudobulb is a storage organ derived from the part of a stem between two leaf nodes"

sophies don't have pseudobulbs ? What do you all think ?
