Woot! Voting done! Still a whole bunch of people left to vote so come on you guys.

Thanks Camille for putting this project together, it's going to be a lot of fun I think, no matter which plant wins.

I'm with you on this, the lobii I don't get at all but the sumatranum does at least have some nice colouration. I won't mind getting one for the project though, because it's FUN!

If it's like past project plants, you may not like the looks of a bloom on your computer screen, but a lot of people change their minds when they see the bloom in person.

I've definitely had that happen to me before. Cattleyas for example look extremely forgettable to me on pictures (more like a narcissus than an orchid) so I didn't get what the fuss was about. But when I first saw them in person, I was converted and am now a happy owner of a ctt jewel box

Also the phaius tankervilliae looks so striking in person... and rather drab on pictures.

That's partly why I'm asking about the lobbii. I know pictures often don't do an orchid justice.

Voted. I have lobbii and cernua already so the vote went to the sumatranum. I want the red form.

The flowers can be pretty large esp. for a Bulbophyllum, I've seen some nice ones that were like 4-5" tall IIRC. They last for a couple of weeks, and well-grown plants grow very fast and throw flushes of many blooms. The color can be pretty variable, but I really like some of the golden ones. The fragrance is delicious, too, kind of 'fruity-spicy' on the one I've really sniffed. Definitely dispels the myth that all bulbos are stinkers.

Since sumatranum is allowed due to its current synonymy status, have you all considered explicitly allowing some of the other synonyms like siamense and claptonense? They should all require substantially similar (easy) culture and there's a lot of nice variation within the lobbii complex. Bulb. claptonense is one of my favorites, slightly smaller flowers and plant than typical lobbii but very colorful and even better fragrance. Some of these are still hard to find, but having more options on which one to pick might increase the appeal. Just a thought...

I mean, I am also not the big Bulbo-fan, but this is one of he very few species I have seen "live" and it is really nice... Also the fragrance is a big bonus!

If you see somehing like lobbii 'wine' or 'borneo type' go for it! I think from tose I've seen, with these you get the nicest colors
