Hi, all, I'm new to this board, and registered because 'orchidsarefun' contacted me about possibly providing Soph cernua in the event that that plant would be chosen for your project. I thought I'd jump in and show the plants I offer and how I grow them just so you could all decide if you'd be interested in these. I've attached (I hope) a photo of 24 Soph cernua that I have which would be available. I do have a few more, but they may be smaller. These are all plants which I've grown from seed from a pollination I made. So they are all approximately the same age (may have come out of flask on somewhat different dates, but that was several years ago) they have bloomed in the past, and some are growing in multiple directions. They are all potted in 2 inch air cone pots in bark mix. Many are overgrowing the edges of the pots, and have some dead older roots- I would consider that most if not all are ready for a repot.

I've had real good results growing these in pots under lights, or mounted on treefern or cork in a large glass case. Perhaps my favorite way to grow them is in 4 inch slatted baskets with a pretty coarse mix. They will creep over the edge of the baskets and sort of form a ball. When grown mounted or in baskets, I find that they do better in the winter in the glass cases which help keep the humidity up just a bit. Potted ones do fine under lights with normal humidity. This species will often bloom on every new growth. I move everything out doors for the summer, and grow under 50% shade cloth.

Although a sophronitis species, these are more tolerant of warmth than others. They've handled 100 degree summer days ok in the past. If they are grown cold, and with bright light, they will develop a nice red tinge on the leaves.

So here's the deal- I pack carefully, and ship USPS priority mail. When I quoted the $20 per plant, I was thinking they would all be boxed together and go to the same address. Priority mail typically adds just over $5 per small box. What I'll do if you all are interested is to split shipping , so sell these for $22.50 SHIPPED. I take pay-pal, or personal check, my paypal/ email address is chaz.smit@gmail.com. Note no 'h' on the end of smith.

I live in PA, and sell orchids mainly on ebay- you can reference my feedback there under cschaz. I'm a member of several orchid societies here, and have given talks to area societies on Rupicolous Laelias. I don't have a web site now, though I used to before we moved a couple years back. My real specialty is the rupicolous Laelias or Cattleyas as they are now known. I grow Soph cernua in amongst them.

Please don't hesitate to email me directly chaz.smit@gmail.com if you'd like more info.

Thanks-

Chaz

J&L replied again telling me that Bulbo lobbii is sold out, and they have 20 each of Ang. didieri and the Den, but they are selling them regularily.

The huge number of US participants is making this very very difficult. I think that this is going to have to be a 2 plant project if a plant other than the Soph or Angraecum wins.
you should email parkside and tell they they NEED to honor the listed price. because we were organizing and suggesting things based on that price. they really cant say no, because thats the price they advertized at.

They sent me another email just an hour ago, they had forgotten to mention that they have 12 of the $22 ones. Apparently the other ones they told me about are not on the website. Doesn't change the fact that there's not enough!

Okay Camille. I will be looking for your PM. Do you want me to PM you back what I find out? Or post it here?

PM me, it's easier to look up the PM again, then to wallow through posts over here!
