take a look at the photos - in pots. Seems unreal.

New World Orchids Sedirea japonica

I am going to get one this weekend !
BTW - Oakhill has a lot of seedling sized items, probably why this is only $12.

I should also say that the species looks promising in that there are a lot of different ones....

Could anyone tell me how to quote someone in my post. I'm new to the forum so I don't know how to work anything! :blushing:

Maybe someone who grows these could let us know. Or Paramount will likely tell me if I e-mail them.
To quote, just click on the 'quote' button in the comments of the person you want to quote and it opens up the message box with their message already there and you add below it.

Paramount has Soph (Catt) coccinea as well for $28.00! They seem to have much better prices on their species than the hybrids.

Cool! I'll try to track down a grower in Europe, this would be a great candidat plant :)
I also found Soph. brevipedunculata in Europe and at paramount, but no luck in the USA yet.

Isn't soph coccinea a cool grower?

zxyqu 03-15-2012 12:20 PM

It's an intermediate to cool grower according to my notes.

IOSPE gives it as cool to warm, and I'll check Orchidwiz but I think you may be right. A hunt on internet seems to indicate temps no more than 80F. That may be problematic for people in warmer regions.

BTW - per the webpage they are in the UK in June and do ship to Europe. They have a lot of VERY interesting species
New World Orchids :D

Hi all,

I still don't know if I will join the project, but here are a few info:

Soph coccinea is know to require cool to very cool temperatures in order to bloom... Otherwise, in intermediate temps it grows very nicely (i know it very well !) into a big ball of leaves... never blooming.
Also the ones at New World orchids are Japanese selections of Soph coccinea (usually 4N clones, with bigger and rounder flowers) which tend to be way more expensive than regular 2N coccinea

I don't know if it was ever in a project or not, but rupicolous Laelia (not called Cattleya) are great little (to miniature) plants, not too demanding aside from light, and quite easy to find on both sides of the atlantic...
In Canada, we have a vendor not mentioned yet who has good quality plants (as well as not so good), it is
Orchids at Hawaiian Botanicals

And lastly, if the choice goes towards a Paph or a Phal species, ForestView Gardens is an excellent choice
