That is a lot to choose from! Camille- have you decided on how many we are going to vote on in the first pole? I'm having a hard time narrowing it down to five! Also, I wanted to thank you for all your hard work and for organizing the project! It has been so much fun and we haven't even got our plant yet!

I think it'll be 5, maybe 1 or 2 more if there are more suggestions by tomorrow night. I think the poll will go up on Wednesday evening (so afternoon for the USA).

Right... plant at Andy's looks a lot like the article above. Plant at Paramount looks like one on IOSPE. At Burnham's the 'cucullata' doesn't look really like either of them, but the Camaridium praestans does look pretty like the IOSPE one. IOSPE gives praestans as a synomyn.
Anyone? I'd like to see a Maxillaria on the list... if only we could find sources for variablis/shunkeana/picta!

Just for your information, IOSPE is a good reference but far from being the most accurate. Many pictures do not correspond with the species listed. So, my suggestion, do not kill yourself in a glass of water, but looking and comparing those pictures.
As for Max. cucullata, I would not make a big deal out of it, and take the plant that is normally sold as such (unless you get something completely different!)... It's a similar case with Paphiopedilum primulinum, where most plants you get now as such (especially in USA, Canada and Taiwanese imported plants) are supposed to be a hybrid and not the true species, which is very small and fragrant, and not those monsters you normally get. Everybody knows that and still "everybody" is happy with those plants..

OK, I'm definitely into keeping Max c. But should we also include synonyms? Maybe the whole 'group' ( http://orchidspecies.com/maxpunctostriata.htm)? Looking at various vendor sites, it does seem this lot are pretty similar and probably often sold under each other's names. Maybe we could narrow it down a bit at a later stage (if it gets that far...) so that at least everyone in the same country/region get the same one!
