Spring 2012 project- PLANT SUGGESTIONS Male

(sorry if this gets posted twice, didn't seem to go through first time)

Im not a huge bulbo person (Ive got a handful inc. lobbii) but off of the list I would definitely nominate Bulbophyllum ambrosia. Ether way I need to get one of those! My second and third picks are the other bulbos on the list. sumatranum, and Bulbophyllum lasiochilum. I guess I haven't seen enough Bulbo's. I'm used to the ones that look like long wooden shoes. These are crazy looking!

Hi and Welcome!

They are a "breed" of their own aren't they?

I'm ready to vote!

I may not be on the OB as much as I used to because I'm doing my MBA but any grower that I list has either come to our society and spoken, I have purchased from personally, or friends in the Memphis Orchid Society have purchased from them.

The MOS is a big society and most have been growing over 15 years. They know a lot of growers that I have never seen posted on OB. Two of my friends in the MOS are AOS learner judges and I have been a scribe for three years (last year for the Mid-America Orchid Congress which we hosted at MOS). My husband is responsible for the orchids at the Memphis Botanic Gardens.

Diamond Orchids - Peter is an AOS judge.
New World - Dr Lehr is an international judge and posts on OB as Fuukiran. In fact he wrote a lot of the information on the Neo forum here.

Again, I was only trying to help by expanding the orchid list.

I understand that, and I appreciate your hard work. I think that what I should have said is that this point it's only important that the plant is available at least in one place for sure. Then after the first poll what you are doing will be very helpful, since people will have a bigger list of growers to choose from. Except instead of researching 20 orchids, there will only be 5-10! If do do keep searching for growers until then, send me the info by PM, so I have it in one place and easy to find when I make poll #2.

As for my comment about the growers, I had in mind some growers that can be hit or miss. In those cases one single person's experience may not mean much, they could have been lucky with their order. And I'd really hate it if there were lots of unhappy people if the project plant came from such a place.

Now that you explain why you know those are good growers, it's fine with me!
I do know New Word Orchids, I order from them when they come to shows in the UK every spring/summer

I know Paramount has caught me with that comment before. If it's on their website that this was found, it is likely that they are stating they were from seed not cloned and are now flowering size.

I don't think so, since baby plants grown from seed or from meristem culture are both called seedlings. The only division seems to be seedlings vs divisions. Which is why NBS seedlings really puzzles me. For me, NBS is neither a mature adult plant, nor a seedling, it's the teenager of orchids!

You suggested them while I was away for the weekend, and Paul and Nathalie did all the research for me. and I don't think I really read the posts from that weekend. I copied everything into the thread with the intention of getting back to these 2 Phals, but as you can tell, I forgot! This thread is just getting too massive to easily go back and check things. I'll search for it now.

As for the Bulbo lobbii vs sumatranum thing, since I never got around to installing my Orchidwiz update I just checked on KEW.
If I understand it correctly, Bulbo sumantrum used to be the synonym of Bulbo lobbii var. breviflorum. However the current state of affairs now is that Bulbo lobbi is the current accepted name of Bulbo sumatranum!
Which would mean that the 2 plants are now the same species. I really don't agree with it, but oh well.

Like I said, I'm not sure I understood correctly, so I'd like to know what you think. Here is a screenshot, since pasting the link doesn't work.

We can always add it to the list, and if it makes it through the first vote I can contact them to see how many they have in stock.
I am also trying to find a US Grower (available at lots of growers in EU, & Paramount have them)As I have first tried to grow a lobbii (bought 2009) who is being very nice to me at the moment so I feel I am ready to try this one now. .
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have found such a wonderful list of plants to choose from. It's already a very long list !!! what to choose there are already too many!!
And a special to Camille for starting & caring for this project
I love OB Projects!
