Not sure about loddigesii, but bowringiana and guttata can get VERY large!

If we start including exchange rates, it's going to be a nightmare! £20 is £20, or 23€, not $30 simply because you are not buying your plant in the USA. Exchange rates are varying a lot with the economic situations, but the purchasing power of the USA/ Europe/UK is quite similar.

Organizing these projects is a hell of a lot of work. On top of my job and evening activities I'm spending 1-2 hours a day on the project, and messing around with exchanges rates on top of current workload does not appeal to me in the least. Mind you I'm happy to run the project and do the work, but only to a certain extent, it has to stay fun for me as well.

That being said, if you are still unhappy with the price limits, you are under no obligation to buy the winning plant.

The problem with Catts, as Ramon points out, is that many get quite large. Most of the Cattleya group plants we can add are small rupiculous Laelias, and I've struck out trying to locate even one everywhere.
Catt loddigesii looks like it might be good, I'll check size info on Orchidwiz once I'm home.

Spring 2012 project- PLANT SUGGESTIONS

I have no intention to flame, and hope I'm not being taken that way.

It's just a bit anoying if plants are being rejected as 'too expensive in the US' as it seems they are in more cases than vice versa. When in fact in real terms the prices are cheaper or the same. How many times on this thread have we had 'too expensive in the US', and how many times 'too expensive in the EU'?

As I said before it's OK by me if it stays that way. There's getting to be plenty of plants on the list and I can always choose to still buy ones that don't make it. It's actually probably not a bad thing if it means that often the EU plants are well under limit: cheap is good! Perhaps something to think about for future projects though.

And I totally agree Camille is doing a great job. I've done enough looking up prices myself to realise it's not a quick job!

The issue is availability. In the US there is just simply more of it so the prices are cheaper. When we see plants getting into the $25 range, that means its usually in the 40 range for Euro.

As crappy as it is, there are lots of plants that still meet the criteria as evidenced by the ones that are on the potential list. Its going to be hard enough to vote for those and if we upped the range to $25, it will add another 30-40 plants more than likely which is much too large for something like this because you will need to have 3 voting periods.

PS: hi Camille! You posted while I was writing. Don't worry, I have no intention of storming off in a huff *G* I will buy the plant if I can afford it at the time (and want it... there's a few I'm not that keen on! Though actually I might even in that case: it might grow on me and I can always swap it later if it doesn't)

PS: If I could make another suggestion... to save Camille some trouble, how about no more plant suggestions unless people research and post prices themselves?

Oh, please no! Don't pull in exchange rates! It's going to turn into a nightmare to handle for Camille. Hehe, I just checked what 20 USD/EUR would be in SEK: 133/177 SEK. And this is a perfectly normal price for a species orchid in Sweden, it might even border on the cheap side.

No, let's stick to the rules and have fun all of us. And I second Rowangreen's suggestion about us trying to help Camille as much as we can with finding out and posting the prices for our suggested orchids.

Anybody else who is really starting to feel pumped up about the voting?
