I also have this one leafmite, and it is a great little orchid. Mine bloomed on 10 spikes last year, and despite the fragile appearance of the blooms, they are very long lived (nearly 2 months). It grows extremely well in intermediate temps. One word of advice from the grower I got it from: The are very susceptible to rot if the plant doesn't dry out quickly, so never water it late in the day.

Sadly it died in the fall. I was going through a really rough time, and forgot it in a bucket of water for over a week. Killed all the roots. I got a replacement in december, though it's much smaller.

Oh NO! yours was gorgeous! Glad you got a replacement! :)
I got one too after seeing yours!

And for my latest bit of madness, since I couldn't find variablis in Canada I decided to find all the Maxilaria I could in all 3 (minus Tenufolia of course since it's been done...) (All Can, US, EU, flowering size unless otherwise stated)

Maxillaria Cucullata
Paramount 28,
Andy’s 18/24 (both blooming), Carolina 20,

I would definitely vote for the Maxillaria schunkeana! It can be grown at intermediate temps as well.

With the prices shown, its much too high.

It's very beautiful. Personally I prefer to have as many scented plants as possible. This one is not scented and therefore would not be at the top of my list..

Oops! I only looked at the EU price... It's been a long day and I'm tired. :blushing:

I've updated the list. The Encyclia is taken off the 'good' list, and I've only added Max. cucullata. The other Max species went to the maybe list, if cheaper growers can be found.

Depending on how many candidates we get, I may remove the ones that are a bit expensive in Canada (some are at $28!)

Also, a question. What do you all think about Lycaste aromatica? Anyone object to a plant above the size limit, with really long leaves? Being deciduous it doesn't take up so much space in the winter.

I've decided to move Brassavola nodosa into the possible candidate list, since it does take a long time for it to become large.

Lycaste aromatica would get a go from me. It doesnt seem that large aside from its leaves but its fragrant which gives it the go ahead. Also, doesnt seem that large in the sizes we will be buying it in either.

This is my first project so, I was wondering when do we start voting?
