Out of curiosity, what would be considered 'normal'/ 'average' with respect to the amount flowers from these? My spike has 7, so I assumed it'd generally make a little clump but Luckygrower has less.... just wondering

I think mine is starting to put out a second basel keiki, just noticed it this morning. Interesting that it's perhaps prone to this.

I would definitely say they are prone. The 4-5 mature ones I've seen in person all had either present basal kieki's, or ones that had been cut off. Also, mine for this project has definitely been cut off of a mother plant, so it was likely a kieki as well.

Well I believe you have the 'perfect' count ! 7 flowers per spike Congrats!
I have not heard or seen of more than 7 per spike? Anybody?

Rosies coment reminds me that one of my TC's to this project plant; Thanks to Camille for enabling! Gastrochilus somai Taiwan; came as a double plant. Since I have had it I have re-mounted and I found a Keikie with accordion leaves under the sphag on the bark mount. I now have 2 mature growths with 3 and 2 spikes each as well as 2 keikies including the one I discovered. Will see hopefully if there is a difference between this and japonicus ?

My Gastrochilus japonicus has 5 buds that are about to open. I have been dunking in bowl of water once a day to soak the moss. Now that the buds are about to open should I continue dunking? If not how would you suggest I water?

Will try to post pix of the plant buds tomorrow.

Thanks
Mark

I tended to dunk mine with the flowers just above the water, it was possible with the layout of mine to get the rest of the plant and have the flowers up.

However several times the flowers got dunked by accident and it didn't seem to hurt them, so there is probably no need to worry.
