It's good that the humidity doesn't have to be that high. Mine will never get that high. I have mine hanging on the arm of the grow lamp. I don't have anywhere else to hang it. I hope it does okay there. I also don't have a light meter to check the levels. I grow by the seat of my pants. Seems to work okay for me so far.

I agree don't cut that spike!! It would be orchid abuse! I'm glad mine is in spike, lets me see what I can expect in the future. If I don't kill it, that is!

I got mine today!! Whoop!
I don't have pics yet but the japonicus has a mass of roots bigger than my fist! It is growing on 1/8 moon of a coconut husk...yes the full piece. It looks like an orchid growing on a brown sliver coconut moon. LOL!

Question time
Does anyone know whether Gastrochilus develops side growths?
After looking at all yours I have re-examined mine as I thought it looked a bit different ... yours all have one straight growth where as my one seems to have several "extras".
Im not sure if I have 4 plants or one with side shoots?
They seem to have their own roots but its all such a tangle I cant see if they are directly attached to the middle growth.
Both my new arrivals have had very good root growth since they arrived - the Gastro's TC the Micocoelia has affectionately become known as the "winkie" plant by my husband !

Mine has a side growth. I think they are predominantly monopodial (a single growth) but just like phals it is possible for other growths to develop, usually known as basil keikis
On mine it comes out of the base, and so far does not have any roots of it's own, I guess as it gets bigger those will appear.
As with basel keikis on phals I would be inclined to leave them on the parent.
