Becca, don't think you'll need to water daily in an orchidarium. I dunk mine in solution of MSU/RO water every other day or so, but it definitely won't mind missing a few waterings if the humidity is high. If someone comes in, I'd make it two to three times a week. Hope this helps.

Eeek....this will mean my mom will have to water my orchid for me....she already thinks I am crazy....lol. Actually she likes them, she just thinks I have gone overboard.
On another note, I just read that for dunking orchids on a mount, they can be completely dunked for about 30 minutes at a time. Does anyone have any opinions on this? Also, say if I have a bucket of water set up for her to dunk the orchid in, is it okay to reuse that water only for the same orchid?

I will tell you how I do mine. Others may cringe or dissagree. I do a quick dunk till bubbles quit coming out of sphagnum - usually 15-30 seconds. Sphagnum will be wet as will mount so roots will get what they need (at least that has been my experience.) My son waters for me when we are gone and says he gets the daily guys watered in less than a half hour (that's quite a few plants.) The only plants that don't get totally submerged are in pots. I flow water through them from a water can. Now realize that if you reuse water you are asking for trouble. I haven't experienced any problems yet, but one day I may experience a outbreak related to reusing the water. I don't reuse because of thrift, I reuse due to no other way for me in house. Sink won't work because it's softened water.

Thanks Ross! I'll see if I can talk my mom into watering for me then...lol. If I reuse the water, it will only be one bucket of water for one plant. I only have two other mounts and they are on Swampsticks, so the project plant is the only one that will need to be dunked! Thanks for the help!

I received my project orchid today! Wow is it little! Mine is in a pot. I requested mounted or whichever was the healthiest or had a spike. And guess what? I have a spike! I posted a photo, but my camera does not take great close up pictures so it is a little blury and looks like part of the moss or a root, but it really is a spike and is about a 1/2 long. I guess when I get back from Mexico I might consider mounting it. Woohoo!

Congrats on your new arrival, just thought I would mention that if your camera has a macro setting (or a little flower icon) you might get better pictures of close-ups. Hope that helps

Looks nice and healthy. Is that a root or a spike? I can't tell.

I did use the macro setting with my camera, it unfortunately didn't help, obviously. I will try taking pictures with a different camera as soon as I can. But it is definately a spike and not a root, trust me

Hmmmm.....weren't there some questions that we were supposed to answer when we received our project plant...such as growing conditions? I just searched this thread and I couldn't find it....but I am sure I just over looked it. If someone could point me in the right directions I would appreciate it......I will forget if I don't do it soon. TIA!
