I got my camera out last night and tried to figure out how to take "cool" photos with it. My lighting is not the best in the evenings, so I will have to see what I can do on the weekends. I am already hoping that I could take some black and white photos and frame. This will be a fun thing to do.
Does this have to be "announced" or invite people to participate in a new thread? kwim?

so we are gonna do this? great! i think we should make a new thread entitle " photography project" or something like that, maybe something that says this one is for the months of november and december. then you, or I, can start one in january. in the thread, just write out basically whats going on. we have to make sure that whoever makes the thread makes sure to let everyone know that it is not constricted to blooms only
are photos from before okay? i have one from last year that i really like! if you want, i could start the thread, but i would like to know what all needs to be included. i could add to that thread a few example pics that i have from the past

Orchidgeeks.com does a photo contest every month. Someone might consider going over there and seeing how they do it.
Quote:
1) The photo comp is open to all members.
2) Three photos per member, please include plant names or indicate NOID
3) Indicate your level of photographic experience/expertise. Choose one of the three levels as described below:
3a) Novice: point-and-shoot experience only, has had camera less than 3 years, no photography classes
3b) Intermediate: beyond basic point-n-shoot, has possibly had camera for 3-5 years, considers lighting, composition, has possibly had 1 or 2 classes on photography basics
3c) Open: For experienced armature's, photography hobbyists, and professional photographers - way beyond basic point-n-shoot, photography may be a hobby, carefully considers lighting and composition, probably more than 5 years experience, has possibly had classes beyond basic photography, includes one who has been paid for their photographic expertise
4) All Non Photo Entries Will Be Deleted.
4a) Photos of own orchids are to be entered only
4b)This is a fun competition to help people improve their photography skills, and not to be taken too seriously.
All comp pics entered are viewed by a professional as well as the judges.
If there is any chance that the images look like they have been taken by a professional and above the standard expected of that entrant then there will be a "please explain" as to how they obtained that image photographically.
4c) Once a member wins first prize in the Novice or Intermediate category's 3 times, they must move up to the next level and they may not advance to the next level until they have won 3 times.

we could do a photo of the month kind of thing, if we are going to make it a contest.
if we are going to do a contest i have a few things to say
-i think we should start with fewer categories, maybe an intermediate, and advanced category for flowers and then a third category for pictures that are not of flowers.
- on a fish forum i frequent, they have people email their photos to someone, how would we get our photos to the contest, without people knowing who's pic is who's ( do we care if people know? ( how do they do it on orchidgeeks?) )
-would we do a poll to decide winners?
sounds like a good idea, contest or project

I think it would be nice to see who's pictures are who's. On orchidgeeks, we just make a separate thread that is ONLY for posting pictures, no chatting.

And it would be neat if we could get one of the "professional" photographers to judge them, since they have a better eye. And have one award for "people's choice".
Otherwise, it's all people's choice, and not really a judge of skill that allow people to learn.

okay, sounds good. should we maybe have a theme once in a while? like a theme for pictures featuring parts of the orchid that are not flowers. and id say once a month. lets just keep all skill levels together for now, to see how much interest we get.
