Good call on the s/h thing. Too bad to, because it would e made a good filler pronect.

Maybe we could do something where everyone went out to their garden center and picked out an orchid, maybe pick genera for all, then see what who gets. Or maybe limit it more. Like say a yellow phal. Or a purple den or something like that.

The Neo project worked like I described, and there were about 20 people in it. I'm not planning anything, I'm just seeing if this is an idea that would appeal to people!

I doný know if I would do á 'just buy any orchid in the garden center' project, since I'm not too keen on getting a noid for the sake of doing another project. Noids are something that I get only when I really fall in love with one, which is not too often.

When I asked how it worked, I meant did people really like it.

I guess I take it for granted the named orchids I can gt at my garden center. Usually they have a few names mixed in. My bad

You can get named orchids?? Not fair! In Europe it's extremely rare to find something named. The only way is if the orchid is so unique that you can name it by sight, like Phal Mini Mark or some of the Onc intergenerics.

Yeah! I have to go through a bunch but there are some names in there. I can get paphs( noids only) and named zygos. I can get a named phal once in same for dens.

At a different garden center I cam get all of the above AND some named cattleya once in a while I even saw a phaius once!

And at one if the supermarkets around here, I can get named orchids of varying genera. Buts that's only because a guy from our OS works there

I loved the neo project and would be totally up for the Den. moniliforme project in the winter.

I too am unable to get named orchids locally.

I dont know if it's a good idea to order plants in the winter.

I would Kiel to bag some kind of project, but I really can't think of anything. I'd be happy with whatever we decide on. I'll let you know If I think of anything.


Is there really anything hat doesn't involve ordering orchids we can do? I'm out of ideas here

Living where I do, I wouldn't be comfortable ordering plants this time of year unless I could get them locally.

The Den moniliforme project has to be for the summer, regardless of the weather. The only way for Europeans to get it (other than the standard variety) is to wait for Glenn from NWO to go to an orchidshow in England in the UK which I believe is in June or August.

Oh Camille!!! You must have been reading my mind! I so want to do Den moniliforme as a project.

In fact I have been drooling over NWO website for weeks now wondering how I can sneak another orchid into the house w/o hubby seeing it.

As for a winter project, why don't we have an art project or article project. Ooo Ooo, I know.

Why don't start a thread where everyone can put a Orchid Care Tip of the Day. I like these. You might be puttering around and have a musing that you want to share.

You get lots of good information, you don't have to spend money, and there is no weather or shipping to deal with.

Same in this part of Europe too. I saw a Bur. Nelly Isler today but it was simply labled 'Orchidaceae'. It could even have been 'Swiss Beauty' from the colouring but no tag so no way of knowing. There are others I've seen in the past which were distinctive enough to name, but they are never tagged.
