Maxillaria tenuifolia (Project 11 - Summer 2010)

I got my Max. tenuifolia and an Amesiella monticala from Oak Hill Gardens yesterday. Very nice plants in good condition.
I potted the Maxillaria in a 4" clay pot which I lined with chunks of styrofoam to make narrower. I used NZ sphagnum moss as the potting medium. It'll go in with the other orchids and sink or swim!
I soaked the Amesiella thoroughly, then removed the fishline that was holding it on the plaque. The plant had not rooted to the plaque yet, but had good strong roots in the sphagnum pad. I put it into a 2.5" clay pot, then fitted styrofoam chunks around the roots until the pot was 3/4 full. Then I topped it off with a little sphagnum, bringing the level to the base of the plant. Again, it will sink or swim with my other orchids at the greenhouse.

The p-bulbs on mine are still getting fatter. Most of them are now quite plump with only slight wrinkles

It seems like all the orchids on my end never re-plump significantly, except for the catt alliances. I suspect it might be the low humidity.

George is officially repotted into a mix of torn up sphag and lava rock. Here's hoping he gets over himself and doesn't sulk too long!

Neat technique using the styrofoam. I'll definitely keep that in mind later- we always keep the styrofoam blocks that appliances come boxed in and such. We put them in the bottoms of our huge planters, but I might try cutting them into smaller pieces for your idea.

Maybe your guys can give George swimming lessons if they do well.

What if I already have one of these plants (and actually, just trimmed it down and repotted it about 4 weeks ago to s/h)...can I still "play"?

I ordered mine a week ago from Carter & Holmes. I have not heard anything from them yet. Do they usually take this long to contact after an order? I have already emailed them yesterday to ask about a shipping date but have not got a reply. Maybe I should pick up the phone and contact them that way. Anyway I am hoping to have my Max. soon so I can show it off.
