Summer 2010 plant project suggestions

The European links above are fine for mainland Europe but not for the UK. (€15-€19 fee for non-Euro transactions).

I'm just looking to see if I can find it elsewhere.

Rosie, there is always the option that you order from mainland together with another member in mainland, and then you get the plants sent to you.. Since I am participating in this project this time, I could offer to order your plant too, and then I could post it with something different than DHL (which is teh expensive courier used by most nurseries, mainly in Germany, for international shipments!)

Rosie, while I understand where you're coming from, I'm against the idea of searching for plants in canada, US, europe AND UK. Finding common plants is going to be next to impossible and you are excluding some very good EU vendors, such as Nardotto or Schwerter.

Like Ramon suggests, mainland europe members can help out. I would gladly buy the plant for you and get paid back via paypal. To save on shipping the plant could be sent directly to you by doing the order in your name. Same works the other way around if the plant is only in the UK and there's transactions fees for € to £.

I've been happily looking up plants and further enlarging my wishlist on Orchidwiz

Per the list of plants in the first post that meet criteria, I wouldn't classify Den kingianum as an intermediate grower seeing that it needs a quite cool winter to bloom.

Some suggestions:

*Den tetragonum (might be too big, there's lots of size variation in this species, 2 to 20in!)
SBOE $25, Paramount $25-28, Nardotto e Capello (12,5€)

Pleurothallis restrepioides Up to 9in
Andy's ($18), Cloud's ($20), Burnham (£8)

Bulbophyllum ambrosia 5in
Andy's ($28 - will try to find it elsewhere cheaper), Cloud's ($25), Grobraschner (15€)

Sarcochilus hartmannii 20in in habitat, but cultivated plants about 6in
SBOE ($25), Paramount ($25-28), La Cour des Orchidées (15€)

Dave, if you would like me to check some things on Orchidwiz like I did in a past project, just sent me a PM with what info is needed!

I'm not participating this time (on a serious orchid diet!). Just want to remind folks that while SBOE has lots of cool plants they also require a 30 quarantine before shipping plants to Florida.

For fun I'll just throw out a suggestion. Hope you don't mind. Have fun kids!

Actually this time most of them ARE coming up as OK for the UK as well Europe. As the only UK participant I'm happy either bow out or do as you and Ramon have suggested and piggy back an order on with someone else.

My reason for mentioning it is that I know other UK people have been put off the projects in the past because of this.

It's actually a similar reason to checking Canada seperately to the USA... they CAN buy from the USA but it's too expensive on shipping.

I'm quite happy for everyone to check just Europe and the USA (I don't think we even have anyone in Canada on the project yet) and I will check and advise on UK availability. If we decide to leave those plants in the poll anyway then so be it.

Rosie, just so you know, when it comes to shipping it's not just those in the UK who pays lots. Most german vendors (except popow) only ship with DHL express or whatever, which is over 20€ whether you're in UK, France or Netherlands. Nardotto's shipping varies with the country (and is 22€ for netherlands and UK) but their plants are so cheap (so you get several!) and so great, that even for broke me the shipping costs are more than worth it.
