Unfortunately they have a 12.00 handling charge. Plus shipping.

Whoa...

The handling charge is also taken into account. I didn't know that!

I can't think of a lot of plants that would fit the price criteria of the summer project with shipping or handling charges being taken into account.

I can think of tons of miniature or small sized Dens that are intermediate growing that are very cool, but they don't fit within the price range.

Same goes for many mini's from other genera. Unless you buy them from Ecuagenera. But it's not easy handling their plants. They need a lot of tlc coming straight from Ecuador to the US and other parts of the world.

I want to add...

Of the plants that do fit all the criteria of the summer project that I'm aware of, some of them are fairly difficult to grow.

For example:

Chaubardia heteroclita - I don't expect everyone on the OB to be able to handle something like this...

That's no fun.

Unless...

Galeottia fimbriata

is a viable choice. They won't be blooming sized though.

I'm going to throw out a possibility of a solution, but the project would be delayed until winter for those in the northern hemisphere.

Australian native orchids are mostly fairly small sized. They're still relatively not well known in the trade. They might have high appeal. Each plant in itself is ridiculously inexpensive for an orchid. However, the shipping and permit costs are sky high.

So if everyone's down, those who are still interested in the project can pool together and order in bulk from the same place.

And Aussie natives are within the temperature ranges of a lot of people in the US and quite possibly the EU. Those in the land of Oz can also get a hold of them and grow them.

There's also nothing that says you have to buy just one specimen...

Could this solve the problem?

Clackamas-Orchids in the US has them for $7.50. Again, they might not be BS.

I don't know about the EU.

The Project is 20.00 + shipping. After looking at it again. I thought it was 12.00 plus normal shipping price. But It is 15% of the cost of the plant. so a 20.00 dollar plant will cost 15.00 to ship. Same as Andy's and Most vendors.
