Ok... so now I'm caught up, I had got the impression this had started a lot longer ago because of the length of this thread so I'm glad I've not missed too much . I'm in... provided I can get hold of the plant for a reasonable cost.

A big Dave for stepping up to organise this

A few thoughts having read through this thread.

1. UK is a different thing to Europe when it comes to buying orchids and I think that is usually forgotten/not known in looking at availability of plants. Although we can import from Europe with no problems there are other issues that may cause problem for UK people to buy from other European countries.

a. First of all the currency... if a site does not take paypal then I have to pay an extra €19 to convert from £ to €. This really limits me to sites that take paypal and most don't.

b. Then the postage... most sites in Europe charge arround €20 to ship to the UK, some are cheeper, but that's the standard.

So if I'm buying from Europe rather than the UK I may be having to pay €40 before I've even added the cost of the plant. Personally I'm willing to pay the postage (and add some TC's to spread the cost) if I can find it from a site with Paypal to avoid the currency conversion cost.

Of course trying to check these things for availability reduces the possibilities, but I know that others from the UK have had problems joining past projects for these reasons.

2. Definately should have just one species. I think the point of the project is to all grow the same thing and compare how it goes for us. Growing different plants is just an excuse to shop not a project, (actually my hubby thinks that the projects are just an excuse anyway ).

3. I love the idea of the Dendrobium moniliforme project... but so far can't find it at the suppliers I'm happy to buy from. I think I will vote for an intermediate project for that reason.

3. I like the idea of just one project this time rather than warm, intermediate & cool. By having three project plants in the last couple I think it has meant less people on each. Of course just one plant means more chance I can't get hold of it (in the last project I could only get hold one of the three). I still think this is the best way to go.

I'm glad you said that Rosie, it's a good point. I'd expect that it also means that those of us ordering from the same vendor have a better chance getting a discount.

And thanks for the reminder about EU ordering- you're right, we should be doing a better job of keeping that in mind.

Since so many of us are all excited and jumping the gun anyways, do you think I should just make a thread for intermediate suggestions so we can keep this thread less cluttered, and have all the suggestions in one place?
(even if the intermediate project is not chosen, as I said, people seem to be making suggestions anyways.)

Sorry I was unaware it was different. Can I make you my go to person on it being Available in the UK? Is it the same for others on the list? I want it to be affordable for all.

Thanks for asking and for organising this project!
To answer your question - I'm OK & looking forward to finding and growing the 'chosen one'!
