So... hubby was doing watering duty and apparently, my Rhyn's potted roots have rotted off. He bumped it a bit and it came detached from the pot. It has a good many roots that were growing above the potting medium so I'm not worried - yet. At this point, I'm thinking it doesn't like being in the pot. Any suggestions on how to repot - or mount this fellow?

Try growing it in a vase - search this site for tips there are lots of threads about this method and it works :)

I think the Rhynchostylis coelestis I bought in early Jan is about to flower - when watering this morning, I noticed something that looks suspiciously like a spike is starting to form (no velamen, not a leaf) - yay! Mine is in a basket hanging up, and has some pretty healthy root growth. Will take pictures soon. (I happen to have acquired within the last month or so the other two species in the Project too, entirely at random)!

Did you get a spike? Can you post some photos please?
Mine just keeps on getting bigger - lots of leaf growth and some roots.. I will hopefully get some flowers next year?...
Anybody else have updates to make?

Mines in bloom again despite all the neglect. I just took pictures and I'll post them when I find my camera cord.

Hi Nenella, indeed it did!

I have a thread about the flowers here.

The plant seems rather unhappy at the moment, with funny blotches on the leaves; not sure if it's a fungus, long-term hatred of winter, or (eek!) a virus.

I was looking for info on Rhynchostylis coelestis and came across this great thread.
I got my rhynco back in July and grow it in a vase as Nenella does. Since arrival it grew many new roots but the growth of a new leaf seems stunted. I mean there is tiny new leaf start but it doesn't grow although it appeared almost right after arrival, three months ago. It just sits there and doesn't come out. Are they this slow or mine has a problem?
I grow it in sunny window beside my other vandas. Can it be too much sun?
If anyone has any ideas, please help me to find out why my rhynco doesn't grow.
Thanks a lot.

All I can confirm is that yes leaves grow slowly...

Waiting for these leaves to grow is like watching paint dry :) I do think that they need more light at northern latitudes than I was giving mine to start with, and although I can keep it at 20 degrees C I struggle with high humidity. No flowers for me.....

I gave mine to a friend as a present. He has a better setup for this orchid. It's growing like a weed now. I can't wait for it to bloom for him. He has a fancy greenhouse. :)
