Here are the pictures!! This is so exciting! I was afraid of this 'chid when I ordered it to be honest, afraid I couldn't give it what it wanted... apparently I'm doing well... I feel successful!

Erin, I was so encouraged by your post that I ran out to the shade house and checked mine. And I have spikes, too! Mine are not as far along as yours, just tiny nubbins. But they will grow fast now.
So, everybody go check your plants for spikes!

Congratulationss Erin & Susie on the spikes!
I look forward to seeing pics of their developpment!!
Mine has put out new roots (one 'brand' new one and 4 other 'branched' ones) and is also putting out a new leaf.. I'ts still in the vase and I have cut off one dead root off it since I 'repotted' into bare root.

I'm not sure my R gigantea is doing anything apart from existing right now. There has been no change at all and our weather has been very variable - a month ago we were still having frosts and then there was a weekend with daytime temps of 25 deg C and then a cool week and then another hot week end and now it is cooler and overcast - it is difficult to find the right place to keep it, and our humidity is very variable - it's a bit dispiriting to be honest.
Congratulations on your spikes - I shall keep on hoping

Hedge,
Try not to be dispirited. Mine is not doing anything either. I am glad, though, that it is still fine and plan on seeing it have a growth spurt soon. Maybe they're like kids. Grow and then stop, grow and then stop. Our's must be in the stop stage right now.

Thanks , Karen, I think maybe the lighting is too low- I know they grow in shade in a jungle environment, but that's still probably more UV than my bathroom window sill, given my latitiude.I think I might try outdoors now frosts have gone, although it might not like diurnal range here.

Well, things are improving - I have new leaf growth starting and the longest root now has a green tip, so improving the light seems to be helping - hurray!
Only putting outdoors on warm days, it still gets cool here at night as far as Rhyno is concerned

I just noticed that I have a spike on my coelestis too! I was really worried about it because I just moved a few weeks ago and my new yard was incredibly sunny so the vandas went back and forth between getting burnt and not enough light before I could get a temporary shade house built. Almost every vanda type Got some burns. I guess they are much heartier than I thought!
