|
oh, sorry i didnt catch that last part about getting species. so we are getting the species laelia anceps? not laelia anything else right?

Just bid and won mine on ebay! i got it from kowamotoorchids. it should be here soon. im soo excited
|
Mine came from in the mail today. So excited and happy the plant is great and healthy. It also has two leads. I'll post pics asap. When I got it the medium was spaghnum moss. Should I repot into something else? Also, the spaghnum moss was wet when it came

You might consider asking the vendor when the plant was last repotted with fresh media, good to know when decided how/when to repot. You may have told us before, but do you mind telling us again? What light, humidity, temperatures, and watering habits you have? All of those affect the media you use for your plant. Great to hear that it's nice and healthy! |
i have it in full sunlight part of the day. its mid sixties here in the day and mid fifties at night. but its warming up. i just got it today so i havent watered it yet, because the spagh was wet when it came. i was told they like to be watered at night and be quick drying but im not positive. i thought i should let it dry out between waterings but im not sure. please correct me if wrong!

I think the sphagnum moss are what the roots are adapted to if that is what the seller has been growing it in. One seller on ebay grows in sphagnum as well, and the plants look very healthy....and go for a lot of money!
|
I agree with Becca, sphag is what that plant is obviously happy in, so I wouldn't mess with it.
And that net pot will dry out just fine. And yes, they like drying out between waterings. (never for more than a day though, and certainly not bone bone bone dry.) |
I have them outside now the temps are the same. But they are now facing east and vet full sun untill around two thirty. Is that ok?
|
Watch for sunburn with that full sun- they may not be used to it, but they'll love it after they adjust.
If you can, maybe have them in dappled or indirect sun for a while, or a lesser length of full sun each day for a couple weeks so they get their "orchid sunscreen on"- that red pigment. |
okay, ill put them in the shade right near they are now. how do i tell when they have sunscreen on?
|
I'd gradually increase the hours of full sun they get over a couple weeks, to harden them.
Tossing a plant that's been in a greenhouse or indoors out in the full sun is like a pale person at the beach without sunscreen. Once they get more sun, you might see that they get a red tint to the leaves or bulbs- this is the orchid equivalent of a "tan"- and is a good sign that they are getting enough light. |
Well all I have available is a spot with splotchy light and the one With fl sun part of the day. I had it in the full sun spot but when I read your earlier suntan post I put it in the splotchy spot
|
Splotchy spot is perfect. :)
|
Okay it looks so happy. I watered it today. Outside gets. Better air movement so it drys nicely. Do the spikes come from where the leaf meets the pseudobulb? Because I see a teeny tiny growth there
|
Ust got an email from Reid over at kawomoto. He says not to go full sun at all. Just brigt filtered. Like my splotchy spot :D

New leads will come from the base of the bulb near the rhizome- you can probably see some dormant eyes. |

It looks so healthy and happy!
|
Yep definitely new growths! It looks very happy. I think as shallow as your basket it, I think the moss would still be fine, but I also don't grow in your area either. If it doesn't dry out say every few days in between watering, then I'd repot it. It just looks to happy to repot in my book :)
|
That's the thing, if it rains before it drys out then it takes a little while to dry out. It rained two days ago. And it's sill pretty wet. So. Well see how it does in the next few days. The sun has just now gotten to that point where it hits my baby partially yet so we shall see what the next few days hold. Hopefully. No repot as it seems so happy

And this picture is a dormant eye. |
Hat is a dormant eye? because I didn't notce it when I got it. Pic 3 is the one I'm wondering about. It has the lead, and then other thing coming out of the side of the same lead.
