Miltonia spectabilis (Project 9 Int. - Summer 2009)

I would like to tag along as well (if that's OK?). I was at the orchid fair in Dublin today and purchased a miltonia spectabilis var moreliana. Judging by the size of your plants though, mine is a VERY long way off of flowering!

Natalie, size doesn't mean anything! This plant grows so unbelievably fast that yours will be big and bushy in no time.

You're not kidding. I was looking at your earlier photos. Great job. Mine has gotten a bit greener since I got it but it's putting out 2 flowers with 6 or more spikes to go. The spikes look like new growth but they emerge between the pseudo and outer leaf. they actually look more like a segmented sheath rather then spikes. I'll post a picture tomorrow.

Well, with the aim of turning them yellow in mind, and with the hot weather we're getting just now, mine is now outside. It's currently in a spot that get's full light from late afternoon onwards and I plan to steadily move it round to a position that get's the light longer in the day.

Let's see what happens :

I've got something that looks a bit different on one of my Milts and am hoping for spikes.
From Dave's (flhiker) info, it looks like the "growths" are coming between the pbulb and leaf. I'm going to wait another week or so before I really get excited!

I've got something going on with my var moreliana too and I'm also trying to not get too excited yet. When I hold it up to the light to get a better look it does look rather 'stem' like.

If it is, it will be my first orchid bloom of the year. That's either really exciting or really sad considering that it's already June!

So much for giving mine lots of sun! I have it in the sunniest spot in the garden for the last two weeks and it's done nothing but rain ever since. I will have to put it back in the greenhouse so it doesn't get an a big oedema blister again like it did last time it was in the rain for a long time.

Thta's also why I think my Max tenuifolia is not blooming. Too many cloudy rainy days, so it's not getting enough sun. Despite being in a south window... My Oncs should be yellow by this time of year, but they are not.

Mine is now yellower... especially the half that stayed in the S window all winter but can't see any sign of spikes. I'm wondering if I should keep it moister than I have been doing ?(I let it really dry out, between watering) and maybe give it some fert as I haven't been doing so. Any ideas?
Any pics of your 'maybe spikes?' girls?
