Kudos kudos kudos, Dave!! Thanks for taking the reins on this!
I think a couple of the ideas already floated would make a lot of sense—a small plant/large plant project, or another cool/intermediate/warm project—these two ideas thus far feel most right to me. They will inherently end up limiting the number of people in each category. And that sounds nicer to me than say indiscriminately choosing a limit to begin with.
I do think, however, that whatever the categories are, everyone within a category should grow the same plant. (Sorry Royal.) I just think that that is pretty much the essence of what these projects are all about.
Having a poll on this after a week or so of floating ideas sounds like a good idea!

Well is sounds like were on the right track. Braking it up to cool/interm/warm make sense! But don't you think that everyone will want to get the intermediate. Jasen mentioned on another thread that getting different sizes mini/compact/large may be a way to go.

Dave, I first wanted to say for stepping up to the plate!
It's wonderful to see that you guys (and gals) now have enough confidence to start a project on your own
I'm always available if you have any questions but I'm sure you'll do a great job
As for your question...
when we had so much trouble finding a vendor with enough quantity here in the U.S. it was very frustrating to say the least
I was discussing it with a few of my friends and somewhere along the way a few ideas surfaced. While it might sound cruel, there needs to be a limit to the number of people who can participate (as Camille suggested). There are still ways for the extras to be involved:
More than one project can be done at one time...use the idea of the mystery project we did (without the mystery! )
Do a Cool, an Intermediate and a Warm Project, each with their own limit of 25...with the same basic rules of our previous projects
Participants would be added in a first come-first serve manner. It would be rather easy to track because the date and time of their join-request would be cataloged in the OB thread for each.
OR
Do the project the way it's always been done (the process works ) with a limited number of people. Once there are more than that number of folks interested, start a second group with a second plant.
I'm looking forward to seeing what ideas the rest of you come up with and again...
Thanks Dave

But do you really think it's better to exclude people, rather than just adding a plant? I just think this way, everyone is happy, and nobody has to sit out.

Maybe the words didn't come out the way it worked in my head
The suggestion I made would not exclude anybody...any member that doesn't join in time for group/plant #1 would just become one of the first members of a second group using a second plant.
Anybody within a certain group (#1, #2, etc) should all be growing the same plant.

I want to join if I can but I can only afford to do it if I can get the plant in the UK as I found ordering from Europe the postage and charges from my bank to pay for them made it a very expensive venture. there are some good orchid vendors in the UK just sadly limited plants, so I can imagine I would have to sit it out

When I pay in NL to for instance Germany I use IBAN and BIC codes and it doesn't cost any extra's. Can't you use IBAN and BIC in the UK?
Last time Camille and I hunted together for the project plant. If you like to join, contact me and mabye I can order your plant too and ship it to the UK (you can use Paypal to pay me). There must be a way to join if you want to. Last time we found the project plant in NL which kept basic shipping costs low.

You probably said it right, I might not have read it right. I don't know, I would like to do a larger plant, though....put me in whatever group that ends up being.

My words might not have come out right either. My suggestion is basically the same as Sue's. Narrow choices down to, say, the top three (warm-int-cool; big-med-small; etc.). Then we just vote by buying our choice of plant. Group 1 will all grow plant 1, 2 will grow two, and so on. If you can't find 1 or two, just by #3. Some might buy them all.
This way anyone may participate by just buying their choice from what ever vendor they like, and we all get our vote (if we can find it). With three project plants (like the mystery project) quantities shouldn't be an issue. If availability is still and problem, we can include plant #4.

the shipping was £15 and my bank charged me £15 for paying using the IBAN number so it cost £30 just to get the plant to me,they didnt have paypal or that would have worked, I just cant afford to pay £30 before I even start paying for the plant, if you can make the postage cheaper by so kindly mailing to me and me paying you that would be wonderful and I am sure would work out a lot cheaper as you have paypal. My husband flipped when I had to pay the charges for my bank to do the IBAN transfer as he knew id already paid for the shipping from the nursery, I am very happy with the plants though just cant afford to do that again, I would love to join in again though.
