Haraella retrocalla (Project 8 - Spring 2009)

Ya'lls plants are doing so well!

I hate to be the first? one to report trouble.

My little guy lost his newest leaf and the one below that. He is mounted. I think he must've gotten too much water in his crown. Anyway, all I've done to stop the problem is turn the mount upside down. The middle of the plant is still brown. Any suggestions on what else to do??? Please.

My little Haraella opened it's first bud on Friday! It is a real cutie! My daughter took my camera with her on a trip so I will post pics as soon as I get my camera back .

Sara, I believe you have done the right thing by now putting it 'upside down' (mine are mounted like this too)
Hopefully it will grow another leaf or you will get a keikie..
Pictures would also be helpful to see what the problem is although it sounds like you are right about crown rot

Would it help Sara's plant to put some 3% Peroxide onto the crown to try stop the spread of the rot then when its done doing its fizzing use a tissue to remove excess moisture, I know I was advised to do that with a Phal I had trouble with and now use it every time I need to removed dead roots, Sara dont do this until a more experienced person gives you the ok!

Some German's pour cinnaman in a crown with rot, as it has a drying effect. Only becareful not to get it on the healthy roots!

If you want to use Peroxide, it really fizzes dead tissue away, but make sure the crown is dry *fast* afterwards (maybe the cinnamon as second treatment). I used both with good results on Phal's but never in the crown, however I read this over and over again on a German board.

Today the rest of the leaves fell off. Now there are none.

The death was very fast. It took me by surprise. The roots don't look bad, but everything left is brown.

Is this the first project haraella that died? I think my confidence has taken a huge nosedive.

Sorry to hear about the rot, thats how I lost the last haraella I had (pre-project). A mister malfunction added a bit too much water into the crown of the plant.

Sorry to hear Sara!
I heaven't heard of other death cases, but I overwatered the little plant. Remember the post about the plant with 9 spikes? I noticed it in time and the plant is recovering fast. By the time I detected the problem is still had 9 spikes and it was putting out some new roots.
It came in moss and I replanted it in fine grade bark with perlite. Went well for a few weeks until 2 weeks ago.
It's now back in very fluffly moss and I checked the roots several times and the roots that are growing look beter than the ones it lost. I removed the spikes except for one but this little wonder putted out a new spike. I guess when they want to bloom, they bloom!

The first 3 leafs (from 7) look a bit dehydrated.

If I use bark again for this plant I certainly won't use the fine grade bark. I think too much water got trapped between the small pieces of bark.

Smelly opened her second bloom yesterday. Now there are two. The first spike looks like it's starting a new bud. We'll see.

Sara, what a bummer! Don't feel too bad. We've all killed our fair share of plants.

Does anybody know if these guys bloom repeatedly off the same spike or do they bloom one flower to each spike? Just curious.
