Haraella retrocalla (Project 8 - Spring 2009)

Well, about that price... well find something. We can make a price for the first pulchra bloom and one for the first keiki LOL
About the Haraella. It saw two growth, one with a small nubbin. The other, I don't know what that one is up to, as it's longer but has no nubbin... mabye a keiki? I can't tell. On the back of the plant I saw some roots, one was trying to unfold from behind a leaf. Tadaaaaaaaa, this evening I saw it were *not* roots.
Keep my fingers crossed for you and I have to see a picture from yours!
Please can you tell me how you are growing the one that you got last year? Then I least I know how I should not grow it ;-)

Hi Cabbo, My previous Encyclia fragrans was in an order that was unfortunately held up at the Canadian customs so it wasn't in very good shape when I received it. I decided later that I hadn't been giving it sufficient water. This new one (from J & L) is in a fine bark mix at the moment and looking good so I plan to leave it there for the present. If it starts to deteriorate I'll move it to sphag moss and perlite. They're supposed to be easy to grow!

Hey I hate to be a party pooper but I was under the impression that as long as the plant did not have spikes originally (in the posted picture at arrival) then we were in the running. I even specifically asked about it in this thread.

I have been encouraging mine along and got the 2 spikes which I have been discussing here thinking that I was in the running for the "first" bloomer.

Now that she is ready to bloom (probably next week) y'all are changing the rules.

Can we just stick to what was offered originally?

So does this mean that people that recieved plant in spike or had spikes grow in the last few weeks can win? Seems a bit unfair since the spikes are due to the growers conditions and not due to the person's care. I don't care anyway since I can't do the contest, being in EU.

Yes, that was my thought too exactly. To be fair I think the rules should stay at what ever was agreed upon for this project but in future ones it would be good to have a decent period of time after you get the plant for a new spike to be counted.

I am not expert enough to venture a guess as to how long that period should be to know that it was the current growers work and not the nurseries that set the plant into spike.

Also, you mentioned plants that arrived in spike, I do think it has been agreed upon that those do not count in the project but I could be wrong. That would really be unfair to allow since folks could call around and try to find plants in spike and order them to capture the prize. lol

But what is the difference between a plant that arrives in spike, and a plant that spikes a week or two after arrival? Either way you chalk it up.....it's not really your bloom. In the past projects, if it bloomed within a month or so from the time you received it, YOU DIDN"T MAKE IT BLOOM.....THE PERSON YOU BOUGHT IT FROM DID! This is the way we have always done it. I mean, I'll give the prize plants to whoever everybody agrees is the winner, but I was assuming that it worked the same as the past. If you have had your plant less than 4-6 weeks, rest assured.....you did not make it bloom! Just my

Oh, I agree. I was just saying that I am not expert enough to boil down an actual timeline and so will leave that to others.

Again, I am not in the project. I did get a plant but I am just along for the fun and the zeal to learn about new species.

I might take part in the next project if the chosen species is one I am interested in and if I do, your time-line of 4-6 weeks sounds perfectly fair.

Sorry, I wasn't directing that at you. In the past, that was always the standard approx. timeline....I thought. I guess when we offer prizes, we'll have to be really specific.

It would be SO much easier IF the project plants we receive (in any project) were not Blooming Size and in spike or bud when they arrive. In the past we've made a concerted effort to get something that was not in it's normal bloom cycle and not in spike/bud but still received plants with spikes. That's kudos for the growers that we've dealt with, in my opinion

The OB Projects are called "Projects" and not "Contests" exactly because of what's being tossed around in this thread. Dave and Jasen were kind enough to make such a splendid offer but that is just a fringe benefit of the true purpose of the "PROJECT". It's not supposed to be about getting a prize, it's about learning how to get the plant to bloom

Let's not push them into regretting doing such a nice thing for us

By the way...mine is doing NOTHING!!!
