For all participants: We are still at a very early stage of this project...the plants we've listed came from just 10 people in 1 conversation! Please use this thread to post any plant that you would like considered as a project plant. It would be best to post the name of the plant along with a link to a site that shows a picture and possibly what conditions the plant takes to grow well. From those suggestions, we'll then see what the general consensus is and if we like it, we have to find a vendor for most, if not all, members to get it. I'll be in chat tonight...stop by if you'd like to have another rap session  |

Thanks Barbara...I don't know how I missed that! I'll add that info to the top post in the thread :) (See, Todd? It happens to us all :) ) Were there any Laelia that caught your eye? |

Cheryl, don't worry...you know from experience that this is not going to be a quick decision :) Stop by when you get a chance. If there's something you like, leave a post here if you can't make the chats and we'll take a look :) |
I could find 11 species of Laelia offered by Canadian vendors. L. tenebrosa and purpurata are probably too large for most people. Among the smaller ones are L. anceps, L. crispa, L. crispata, L. lobata, L. perrinii, L. briegeri, L. rubescens, L. fournieri and L. bahiensis. Several of these are rupicolous species...very mini but need high light and best mounted. In fact, most Laelia perfer mounting. One that does catch my eye because it can be potted, is fairly small and will grow at lower light levels is L. perrinii. I wonder if that is available in Mexico? (or Findland or Australia..and how many other countries are involved in the project?). Here's a link.

Thanks Todd :) I've been looking too and I saw perrinii and fournerii availble in the U.S. (there were also others, but I like these 2). Another question: have you been able to find ACACALLIS cyanea in Canada? It's available in the U.S. and in Finland!!! The countries involved at this point are: U.S., Canada, Australia, Finland, Mexico and The Philippines. |
I like the laelia idea a lot. I also like Brassia Verrucosa. Now that I have access to the internet again(lost it over the weekend) I will join into chat but not tonite (we are at sea cadets)
|
I like the laelia idea as well. Oak hill might be our best bet for that.
The Gongora chocoensis looks really cool. I especially like that its named after the state of Choco in Colombia. In anycase, its sold in a 6 inch basket. Might be too big for me. If it is, I'll just put it up for trade. |
Alas no Acacallis :(
I must say, I do like the L. perrinii...I suspect people will want to add that one! :) |
I expect Mexico will be the challenge...I could not find any on-line vendors there to see their offerings. I assume Finland would get theirs from other EU vendors. Seems to be plenty of vendors in Australia and Phillipines. I think project 3 will indeed be the ultimate test!
