Spring 2009 Project -chat notes

Hey all. I missed the first chat. I have a request for a newbie to the project. Can we also discuss the rate of growth on the proposed plants? I would prefer one that grows either medium or fast....not a slllloooowww grower.
(I tend to fiddle too much with the slow growers) It would help me in making my decision. Thanks.

Of the plants discussed so far, I'm liking the Den tetragonum the best.

Guys, I don'twant to play the grinch here, and Iknow Orchidwiz has a different information, but chaeck again for the size of Dendrobium tetragonum. I admit it is a gorgeous plant, and is also in my wish list, hoever, I have never seen a single plant ofthis species, which could be considered a mini to small plant!

IOSPE indicates small to medium (Small - under 12" tall leaf and pseudobulb Medium - under 24" tall), Lavarack in his book "Dendrobium and their relatives" indicates 16" to 24" tall (except for var. melaleuchaphyllum, which is up to 12" tall)

I have personally never seen F2F a plant smaller than 16"... Except probably some posted here in OB... I know Shannan's plant is about 10" (if I remember correctly) and there was another one less than 8", but I do not remember whose plant it was...

and yes, before I get it told again, I know we must follow the information in one single source, and not "based on everybodies experience".. I just give my two cents here, so that no one gets surprises later... Of course, itcould be possible that some particular clones are rather minis.. but then this should be discussed with the nurseries first!

...and do notget confused, the var. giganteum refers to thesioze ofthe flowers and notthe size of the PBs. This is notthe largets variety in the group.

Melissa, growth expectancies can be discussed on any plant chosen...if it comes up in our conversations

I have a "standard" and also the giganteum...both of them are small/compact. Many of the plants we look at can possibly, someday, become a larger plant but that's when you divide and share with your friends The size of the bulbs/leaves/spikes is what needs to be kept under the 12 inch mark

Also can't make the Thursday night chat; work has other plans for me. However, I will follow the threads on here, and also add a suggestion: Dendrobium unicum. Very cool tangerine-scented flowers. IOSPE says it's a mini that likes to be mounted, intermediate everything, needs dry winters. Here's the link: IOSPE PHOTOS

Having so many people willing to help me with this project is like a gift! I really appreciate it

I spoke to Camille this morning and the Bulb dearei IS available in EU.

Our next chat isn't until Thursday so I'm going to leave the list as is until Weds. If somebody finds different information on any plant in Terri's list, please let us know so we can confirm whether to keep it in play or not.
