Rolando, I guess it all depends on what people nominate as to how much of a mystery it is... you could end up with 5 Catts in the final anonymous poll, then no one would know for sure until one of them bloomed!

I agree. I would be part of the warm and the intermediate groups. Try to grow the intermediate inside in the family room where it's nice and COLD !!!

That way it makes more sense. I guess we can do it that way to have a more organized polling.

Hi Adam, thanks for taking the time to post that!

You make some valid points and suggestions...I'll try to address each one.

1. Let's figure out who will be participating in each of the climate groups--it seems like a moot point for me to be nominating/narrowing plants for the warm/hot group if I am not going to be growing/participating in plants from that group. We should also try to set a deadline for signing up for this project--we want everyone to be able to participate, but it sucks when things get whittled down and then someone throws another list of plants at you; perhaps if you join after a certain date you just agree to adding input, but sitting out on bringing new plants to the table. Say perhaps 15 August

From experience, I know that it's hard to set a sign-up deadline. We wouldn't want to turn away any new OB members if they wanted to join. Your suggestion about them not being able to suggest plants after a certain date might work but what if they would be suggesting "The" plant we'd all go bonkers over?

We'd use your ideas as a guideline for sure but it's almost guaranteed to get away from us at some point

2. Since everyone is up in arms about the entire hybrid/species thing, I motion that we limit ourselves to species, unless it can be proven that the hybrid in question is available in the EU/Canada/S. America/Asia--before you make a hybrid suggestion, please do a little googling or use the nursery search that was devised in the last project.

Any hybrid suggested would go through the same process we always use, as you described here. If it's not available to all, then it doesn't go to the list.

3. Because of the confusion over prior list plants and the entire voting for numbers process, I move that after we have our temperature group "members", each member is to nominate 2 plants for their group. We can do our discussion, polling, etc. based on the lists that we create--again, before a nomination is made, please do a little homework to see if it is available readily, if it fits the size requirements, etc. As per above, we need to establish a deadline for this process as well. Say 20 Aug

...and I really don't understand why a numbering system is causing such an uproar It seems to have worked well in the Neo polls...I see no problem with doing it that way.

4. Polling: I have been rolling this one around in my head--in lieu of assigning numbers to our plants I motion that we publish our plants only by genus in a poll (no hyperlinks, no photos) IOW, if there are five plants on the list to be polled, Masdevallia tovarensis, Cymbidium mastersii, Cymbidium lowianum, Calanthe tricarnata & Calanthe brevicornu, the poll would simply state: -Cymbidium -Cymbidium -Masdevallia -Calanthe -Calanthe;
Each group participant gets two votes (persons not participating in a climate group do not get to vote). Obviously if there is only one Cattleya on the proposed list we are all going to know what it is--and if we all get a cattleya sans tag from a vendor, likewise we are going to have a clue... The list from which we are polling should be in random order, and the species which accompany the genus should be known only to the keeper of the list. Sidebar Sue: is it possible to make a poll only available to members of each list? Say the 25 members of the warm group are the only ones that have access to vote in the poll--any member of the board may view the poll, but only those participating can cast a vote?

I think having any kind of identifier takes away a level of the mystery we're striving for.

As for the polling, our OB system is set up to allow for one vote in a poll for each member. It can't be changed, we've looked into it in the past. It would also create another level of work for me, making sure that the votes in the polls are valid. Folks get excited and vote in polls even though we ask that they don't if they are not on our participant list. It happens quite frequently (although I must say, it's going smoothly on the Neo polls )


I'm really not trying to be a stick in the mud here. I just really need to be comfortable with the way this is set up and the suggestions being made just don't feel right to me. Those of you who joined in on the last two projects saw how insane it can get...and I've (with the help of some friends) have always somehow been able to keep it organized.

Are we going to get this thing started or not?

One last thought, since Sue has most of the responsibility of the work, I think she should have the final say as to how it goes. Most have already agree'ed with her plan, I say lets give it a try Plus you are still going to get a new orchid no matter how we choose.
