How about this! Let the vendor pick the plants then have Sue make a list of 10 like plants for each group for a poll (of course 1 will be the actual plant pick). We all research the 10 different plants and make our best guest is to what it might be. Then when it flowers you will find out which one it is and see if your right. It's late maybe I just need some sleep.

Suzanne,
Are we now trying to narrow down a list that contains 10 plants from each of the 3 temperature ranges? Selecting plants from the list you provided yesterday, as well as from another list that hasn't been posted yet...and from additional suggestions that members make?
I'f I've missed something here, please be patient with me. I just got home from a 12 hour shift today...and also just finished reading the last 4 pages of this thread...
I do have a hybrid suggestion that is just starting to show up as a seedling offering or NBS. It's Pot. King's Jewels. It's a Fender's cross new to the chid scene. I saw a photo of a sib from this hybrid and it made me

David, something like that hybrid is probably only going to be available to members in the US. We normally try to pick something that is available in the US, Canada, and Europe - possibly elsewhere too if we have members who want to participate.

David, you're not missing anything...that is exactly the way I think it should be done but if we can't even agree on how to do the project, how the heck is the project gonna get done?

In whatever decision we make, the plant will have to be available in the US, Canada and Europe, as in our previous projects. We've always done just species because it's easier to find them worldwide...bringing hybrids into the equation is going to make that part of it a little tougher...but not impossible

I really hate the idea of just letting a vendor choose the plants and I don't want to choose them either. In our past projects, we've spent weeks getting together with our friends here discussing orchids and having a great time along the way. If we take the easy way out and just ask a vendor to make those choices, we're missing out on the best part of it!

That being said, I think it's presumptuous of us to think that a vendor has the time or inclination to take on such a responsibility...I mean, they're all wonderful and would probably work out a way to do it...but I won't be the person asking such a thing from any of them.

Let's come to some conclusion, folks...this is sucking the life right out of it for me

Default Mystery complications...

Hi Sue et al...
I've been watching the e-mails go zipping back and forth--and taking note of the dark clouds that have been forming; perhaps we could change the guidelines a bit and see what that does...
A proposal:

1. Let's figure out who will be participating in each of the climate groups--it seems like a moot point for me to be nominating/narrowing plants for the warm/hot group if I am not going to be growing/participating in plants from that group. We should also try to set a deadline for signing up for this project--we want everyone to be able to participate, but it sucks when things get whittled down and then someone throws another list of plants at you; perhaps if you join after a certain date you just agree to adding input, but sitting out on bringing new plants to the table. Say perhaps 15 August
2. Since everyone is up in arms about the entire hybrid/species thing, I motion that we limit ourselves to species, unless it can be proven that the hybrid in question is available in the EU/Canada/S. America/Asia--before you make a hybrid suggestion, please do a little googling or use the nursery search that was devised in the last project.
3. Because of the confusion over prior list plants and the entire voting for numbers process, I move that after we have our temperature group "members", each member is to nominate 2 plants for their group. We can do our discussion, polling, etc. based on the lists that we create--again, before a nomination is made, please do a little homework to see if it is available readily, if it fits the size requirements, etc. As per above, we need to establish a deadline for this process as well. Say 20 Aug
4. Polling: I have been rolling this one around in my head--in lieu of assigning numbers to our plants I motion that we publish our plants only by genus in a poll (no hyperlinks, no photos) IOW, if there are five plants on the list to be polled, Masdevallia tovarensis, Cymbidium mastersii, Cymbidium lowianum, Calanthe tricarnata & Calanthe brevicornu, the poll would simply state: -Cymbidium -Cymbidium -Masdevallia -Calanthe -Calanthe;
Each group participant gets two votes (persons not participating in a climate group do not get to vote). Obviously if there is only one Cattleya on the proposed list we are all going to know what it is--and if we all get a cattleya sans tag from a vendor, likewise we are going to have a clue... The list from which we are polling should be in random order, and the species which accompany the genus should be known only to the keeper of the list. Sidebar Sue: is it possible to make a poll only available to members of each list? Say the 25 members of the warm group are the only ones that have access to vote in the poll--any member of the board may view the poll, but only those participating can cast a vote?
5. After polling: Sue or whomever will take the top ten (which all the groups have voted on and submitted) and narrow it to 5 plants (using whatever arcane methods they have at their disposal...I for one use the stair method); the final 5 will then be assigned those dreaded numbers (or maybe we should give them colors... ) Group participants may select their personal favorite from the resulting poll #'s 1-5 (or blue, yellow, green, red or purple...) and off we go
Anyways, just my
Adam

Adam it was a long explanation and I like the idea; but if it's going to be a "Mystery Project" wouldn't revealing the genus make it less of a mystery. We still won't know what plant is within that genus but it won't be as much fun to try to indentify it. Just my opinion. Either that or like Sue said we can make this a regular project instead of a mystery one.

I think splitting things from the start into climate groups is a good idea. Let's get an idea of who/how many people are interested in each. I would want to participate in the cool and intermediate ones.

If Sue wants some help, I'd be happy to help organise the cool group (in all countries).

Let's see if we can get everyone to agree broadly with what is outlined above (as I think it is pretty much what Sue and other's had in mind...) then maybe we can set up three threads - one for each climate group - and start discussing plants!

I really want to get to the discussing plants part!! Its so much fun!
