Summer 2024 plant project- Paph primary hybrid Male

well, finally we have joined the fun! feels like we are getting to the party after the kegs been run dry, but hey, better late than never!!!

we ended up getting a philippinense x haynadianum. the reciprocal cross (hay x phil ) was registered as Paph. Lebaudyanum way back in 1895, so supposedly this is also a paph. Lebaudyanum...

check out the repot vid we did as we have immediately put into s/h per our paph protocols...

hope everyones paphs are doing great!

Nice looking plant tmoney! Your posts reminds me that now that I'm back from my month in France, I need to finally join in on the fun. I don't know yet what plant I'm going to buy, so time to start shopping.

hey camille, have fun shopping!!!! its the best part of orchid growing, isn't it?!

there were a lot of good options, and we had our eyes on a different plant from our usual paph vendor. but we needed a bunch of supplies so while ordering bark we shopped the orchids and found this one. we also replaced a faireianum that we lost a couple years ago, so just decided to go with this one for the project.

wichmann, as usual, has a lot of nice options!

Thanks for the tip about Wichmann, they really do have a lot of nice plants! Their Paph selection is amazing, it's really, really hard to decide what to get. Good thing I'm planning on getting several plants to make the shipping costs worth it.

I'm jealous that you live in Germany, you have so many amazing vendors with cheap shipping. Meanwhile the main vendor in the Netherlands is a steaming pile of dung, and the other big one closed down when the elderly owner passed away.

yeah, the wichmann outfit is one that we have really been wanting to visit and talk to. and yes, we are very lucky to live where we live.

buuuut, things are changing here too and a couple of old german family growers we have talked to have said that the market we know now is much much smaller than 20 years ago. these families all know each other and have deep ties...many of the nurseries still left are in a small geographic area not far from us. its an interesting market study if nothing else...

we still owe you that keiki and we have one on the little sister that is may be ready. it has your name on it!

I've narrowed down my search to 3 primaries. For those that know Paphs here, which is likely to be the most forgiving and not too slow growing? I do like delenatii crosses and am leaning towards the Deperle since it's multifloral (and sold in spike!).

Paph Helvetia (philippinense x chamberlainianum)
Paph Deperle alba form (primulinum x delenatii)
Paph Armeni White (armeniacum x delenatii)

I have not forgotten about it, but might be good for you to hang on to them a bit longer! I had a disease wipe out most of my Phals over 2022-2023, and I'm not sure it's safe yet to be reintroducing Phals to the collection. I bought a couple Phals recently to act as the canaries in the coalmine, so now it's wait and see what happens to them.

My success rate with Paphs isn't great. Aremeni White has been really forgiving though. When it blooms, the flower opens pale yellow, then becomes white as the pink pigment develops. Fairly fast-growing.

I would expect Helvetia to be slow, being multifloral. Deperle may be slow too, hybrids across sections tend to be slow, and also shy bloomers. (Paph primulinum is in section Cochliopedilum and delenatii is in Parvisepalum) Those are just my guesses, the last two I haven't grown.

hey cam,

if it was us we would avoid anything with delenatii in it. that is one species that we have struggled badly with...and not just one...we have owned multiple from different vendors and we have only one left that finally is starting to stabilise a bit. they seem to need something different than the "usual" paphs and are slow to recover from mistakes.

also, personally i don't like to buy our paphs in bud or bloom cause every one we have done that with has blasted or dropped immediately. my feeling is that they don't like being in boxes as much as phals. or other genera.

but of course, this is only our opinion, buy the one YOU like the most!!!! they all look nice!

p.s. - the chamberlnmn is related to liemianum, which is one of our most vigorous paphs and as a sequential bloomer just opened up its 7th flower, carries 3 easily at any time, is carrying 2 swelling capsules, AND is putting on 3 new fans. a serious weed. so my vote is for option A, but please refer to my previous remark ,)

Thank you both for your very helpful comments. The obvious solution is probably to get them all!

Like Roberta, my success with Paphs is so-so. I can keep them alive, they grow, but rarely bloom (once every 2-5 years). So I'm obviously doing something wrong. Probably not enough water, and not enough light for one in particular. I would like to use this project as an opportunity to become a better Paph grower.

Strangely enough I don't have trouble with Phrags.... I have 2 which are now flowering sized and both are now flowering or in bud.
