I've seen the Saint Swithin elsewhere while looking for primaries I like. I can't remember where it was, but it was also a good price. If I remember I'll let you know.


I really love the colors of this Paph at Cramer (also a very good vendor) but it's not a primary hybrid!

Exactly, that's why I ordered now and didn't wait. I understood currently it's blooming season for Saint Swithin.
I haven't seen it offered by Akerne last year, so May, June, might be the months he offers them.
Can't you order now, I assume you need a plant sitter for your other orchids too?

I grew St. St Swithin for quite a few years, had a couple of plants. Eventually lost them but got some nice blooms over multiple years. They really should have had an unheated greenhouse (some protection but temperature variation), I think one year they got too cold, did bring them inside in late fall, may have pushed it a bit too much.

Hi All!

I'd like to join the project with a Paph Donvischilum (concolor x leuchochilum). I too already have a number of Paphs in my collection, but I am excited about this one in particular because it is my first Paph in the Brachypetalum group.

I purchased the plant about 6 months ago from Paph Paradise, and have not yet bloomed it. It has made a new leaf, though, so I am hopeful that it is happy enough to produce a big fat bloom I can share with y'all sometime this year

@ Camille. Regarding your openings post. Akerne has 2, not 1, primary hybrids. St. Swithin and Ma Folie. Or am I wrong? Ma Folie being a smaller plant with beautiful mottled leaves. Easy bloomer. Easy to grow. Can take temperatures as low as 16C at least.
Got a cooler winter in my care and started the spike when it still was “dark” and cold past winter.

Or is a Maudiae type always a hybrid?

Maudiae is always a hybrid, as far as I know.

Maudiae is definitely a hybrid - the original Paph Maudiae is even a primary ( Paph. callosum x Paph. lawrenceanum) but most of the Maudiae-type Paphs are more complex hybrids - this one has been used in all sorts of hybridizing for years. I am sure that Paph Maudiae has been remade many times, the original was registered in 1900. (Even before MY time ) IF you can get an actual Paph Maudiae, that would be fantastic, it is such a classic foundation grex.

Paphiopedilum Maudiae is a primary hybrid, callosum x lawrenceanum. Hybrids of that would not be primary hybrids.

I have ordered P. urbanianum x appletonianum from Paph Paradise (thanks ES, et al.) The cross has been named Aga'pe and I couldn't resist. This crosses a cool to intermediate and a warm to hot grower, so it should do well in the tent.

yeah, we could have gotten it now, but it was just too much stress as i have my particular way of receiving and treating orchids when they are new. its just more that i didn't want to add to our list for our waterer. we already have a catasetum cutting sitting there that she has to update us so we can tell her when to start watering it its just more complicated already than it should be, hahaha. we will get one in a couple weeks...
