How exiting this must be for you Kiki. Peek-a-boo

I want you all to know I've been holding up all your pictures of blooming Sedirea to my tiny little plant so it will know what to do. It's busily growing a new leaf now. No sign of a spike. I think it's too little.

Your TCs are excellent too! Nice haul Ramon and Kiki! I'm picking up 3 more slippers next weekend including a Phrag. Jason Fisher.

I'm having fun following along here. Go Sedireas!

I'm not a participant of Project 6, Sedirea japonica, but thought you'd like to see what you can expect.

I got my japonica two years ago - in spike. In 2007, there was one inflorescence but also a keiki began growing. On this blooming, there are two inflorescences on the main fan (8F/4B and 1F/8B respectively) and a small inflorescence (3F/1B) on the keiki. It is nicely scented with only 1/2 its flowers open.

japonica is still in its original 4" plastic pot filled with lava rock. Although the pot broke long ago, vigorous roots inside and out are holding it together. We grow this as a vanda at slightly lower light with humidity 80 - 85%.

Oh WOW! Look at it grow! That is a fantastic specimen cneos! Question, when you say you grow it as you would a vanda, does that mean feeding with every watering as well?

Default Not sure if it was a good idea, but...

I decided to use my standard Sedirea japonica as my project plant (and let the Sedirea japonica 4N as my own sub-project). As I was working from home today, I decided to re-pott my plant (yes, I know, i was supposed to be working and not playing with my chids... )

anyway, I got my plant, saw the neos sitting next to it, and decided to try something different, in order to increase the challenge of my project, and practice a bit with the japanese traditional method I plan to use with my Neos. However, I decided to modify it a bit, and somehow mix it with S/H technique, as I read Sedirea like it quite humid, and I do not have very high humidity in my growing place (This will also change soon, as after re-potting the plant, I went to internet and ordered a whole misting system - this hobby is going to kill my bank account )

ok, here is what I brought myself into....

As you can see, I used an inverted basket filled with LECA (the biggest pellets I could pick from my stock, in order to provide more air for the roots, and making it less S/H) and placed it in a clay pott with side holes:
I glued the basket to the pott, in order to provide more stability

then I started wrapping NZ Moss around the basket, which happened to be not an easy task (So guys, you know what is coming up to us trying japanese traditional method without the basket )

so, one at this step and after several attempts to keep the moss attached, I went to my plant. took off all the old medium, and place it on the top of my moss-basket-LECA mountatin. I paid lots of attention to fit most of the roots into the basket, but leaving them still some space to grow in the direction they need, and leaving some roots growing outside.

Once at this stage, I arivved to what I considered the most difficult part: wrapping the roots with Moss, and making it still look nice. I spent more than 30 minutes trying to convince that St---d moss it should stay atached to the whole set, instead of falling down!!! and that all without using anything else but moss!!

anyway, here is the result:

maybe not the cleanest one, but IT WILL STAY LIKE IT IS as I am not planning to move it again, unless the Sedirea start crying "TAKE ME OUT OF HERE!!!"

Our vandas get watered every day - sometimes two or three times a day in the summer. The feeding regimen (for all the vandas) is usually once a week; every third watering/feeding we add Scott's Calcium Plus. This makes for vigorous root growth.

As mentioned in my previous post, the plant is in its original pot, broken as it is. The roots grow all around the pot, but the pot (and lava-rock mix) is easy-draining. At some point we might try to remove the plastic pot but if it ain't broke ...

BTW, even a small inflorescence with only 3 or 4 flowers has a very nice fragrance!

Enjoy watching yours grow and bloom!

Very nice, Ramon. And the project begins...

I finally got some photos of my S. japonica and all the traveling buddies! Oak hill is one of my new favorites!

Here is the star of the show:

And the traveling companions (except for the Polyrrhiza lindenii that wouldn't upload ):
