It is a really pretty hand thrown purple clay pot. I also got a new potting mix from Broward Orchid Supply at the show. This mix dries out a bit fast for me but I am getting used to it. I am growing it inside in a sunny room. It has some new roots. That's about it. Here are the pics . First, when I got it (when the project started), second when I repotted it in May, the rest are recent pictures, and last is the sunny bathroom when he lives with the other difficult 'chids. Those are south and west windows. Temp is constant 75. Will this plant bloom in these conditions? Would it be better off outside in the constant rain and 90+ temps? It certainly isn't growing very fast! Any advice would be appreciated.
I really like those purple clay pots! I've read that they're more porous than other pots and so the plant breathes easier but it will dry out faster too.

Temps sound perfect and if it's raining everyday, iIam betting the humidity is good too. Mine seems to like quite a bit of good air circulation , as well.

Your plant looks great to me! I think they're kind of slow growers until they get a wild hare! And then it seems like all they sudden they really burst into action. . .with lots of roots and new growth. I have another Sedirea that did just that. Sat there doing nothing for many months and then wang-o, it's off to the races.

I really do like MSU fertilizer and I add a bit of KLN to my RO water. . .seems to help a lot too.

So inside at a constant temp is ok for these plants? It doesn't need a cool winter or anything special? I am not used to growing plants in the house (as you can see) and I have to learn how to do it right! Thanks for any advice on growing these.

Well I have been really bad about posting updates for my project plant....so here are a few photo's of my Sedierea. It has stopped loosing leaves as I was having previous issues with now that I keep the moss moist at all times...almost wet in my opinion, but I never let it dry out. It has now started putting out new roots and a new leaf!

Default My Pregnant Project Plant...

Here is my pregnant "Project 6" Sedirea. The top two leaves are new growth since it's arrival. It sits in about 60% sun light, 90+ temps, with a weak fertilizer misting (twice a day).....and of course, pickles and ice cream!2008_0803xmas0035.jpg

Default Project 6 Sedirea – September update

Hey all...well, after a couple months of non-activity, I'm seeing some more action on my Sedirea. I think this is partly due to my giving it an increase in light a couple months ago. Have a second new leaf started as well as roots popping out all over.

well... here is my update (even if a sad one )

If you all can remember, I've bought two different Sedirea japonica during the Orchids Show in Thun (April 2008): a standard form and a 4N (lately confirmed to be Daruma type)

I've repotted both plants on Spahgnum moss (à la Neo's traditional japanese culture), and both plants were doing great. They really love growing on top of the moss "vulcanos", being watered once a week, and having T8 light just above them (about 4" above them).

I had chosen the standard form to my OB Project plant, and the 4N to be my own-project plant.

Then, August came and I went to Paris for one month. As I posted in another thread ( http://www.orchidboard.com/community...lp-needed.html ) I've had a terrible thrips invasion in my chids collection during this time, and the friend taking care of my plants did not recognize what was going on. When I came back from Paris, I had already lost several plants, and others were severely damaged.

However, my Sedireas and Neos were not affected (well, that's what I thought) by the Thrips, or at least not that much.

I've checked my both Sedireas, and they were doing well, with new roots growing, etc, etc, etc... The Standard Sedirea had a yellowish leave, which I considered normal, as it was the oldest one (the dry leaf in the picture).

This morning I've got the shock: My Standard Sedirea is almost gone 4 days ago, it still had all the leaves on it, and all looked green and healthy You can see in the attached pic how both plants are today... left Daruma, right standard)

Does anyone has a clue what this could be?

so, I think I have been succesful with one of my own-project plants so far (I have two other Standard Sedireas which are also doing well), but am out of the game with the OB-project

Ramon, I'm so sorry to see the photo of your "sick" plant. That is so very disappointing! Strange that only the one is affected. Was there an extreme temperature change or something like that?
