These abbreviations are killing me. What is NWO? And then when a Sedirea Japonica is referred to as a Daruma Maru I start to go insane.

Anyhow, let me tell you about the great bargain I got on my Sedirea Japonica. I attempted to buy a mature plant in bud on E-bay and lost the bid to someone else. The plant sold for $31.99. Orchids of Los Osos was selling plants on E-bay at the same time for $7.95 and I bought one. It arrived in two days and it was a beautiful plant growing in a three inch pot without a single bit of damage. It was also in bud and contained eight buds that are beginning to open. This is the first time that I have ordered anything from this nursery but I believe I need to try my luck with them again since I was so satisfied with the first plant.

Jerry, I tried to PM you but you aren't set up to receive PMs. Anyway, I would strongly recommend you repot that plant ASAP. I received 2 plants from them last year that had traveling companions I hadn't bargained for . PM me if you like for details.

LOL...okay...

NWO is New World Orchids and they specialize in Japanese species such as Neofinetia falcata and Sedirea japonica. Daruma Minmaru is a smaller version of the species

I got my original Sedirea from the same place as you and I was very happy with it too but others on the board did have problems with their orders. Check the plant and roots carefully.

well Jerry,

some info regarding the japanese names I've got this from a japanese colleague at work:

Ogonmaru - Golden ball
Benisuzume - Red sparrow (actually, it is the Red Avadavat ->she showed me the pictures of the bird)
Suikuden - still not sure.. But I found "Shunkyuden" as orchid's name(Fukiran) in Wikipedia, if so it means something like "Spring comes"!
Tamakongo - Strong ball like metal

Daruma - a very important buddhist monk who meditated for more than 7 years in a position without arms and legs (I still have difficulties to understand ho wthat's possible, but ok,, asians are asians )
Minmaru - Bright ball

As per my Sedirea japonica 4N, she found a website saying that it is actually Sedirea japonica var. Daruma and that Minmaru is a clonal name... so, I think I can now re-label my little monk to Sedirea japonica var. Daruma

the Daruma variety means the leaves are smaller and round, like a monk meditating in a position where legs and arms are not used, and for that reason looks like a ball

What happened here?

Ramon and I both answered those questions in the two replies right above your second post Jerry...now I'm confused

...and Terri and I both mentioned that you should check the plants from los Osos very well as some folks here have had problems in the past.

Here's my Sedierea, all 5 flowers are now open it looks great. This is the only plant in my collection that is mounted I'm going to pot it up when it's done blooming, I'm thinking of the way Neos are done, hope it works. Jim.
