Way to go, Jasen!
I think these will be our first Project grand-chids!

Guess I'm getting more and more like Ray and questioning the "accepted lore" of orchid growing based on my own experiences. Since I didn't get a chance to water my Sederias this morning, I'm off to do it now!
Agree with Ross... I also water m plants at night as very often I have no time during the day... They also get automatically sprayed at 20:00... The only thing I try to ensure is that they do not stay "leaves wet" when it is dark...

it works fine so far!

I'm an evening waterer too! Like Ross and Ramon I just make sure all the leaves are dry when I'm done. I have a fan running too so I figure if I miss a little drop it will dry quickly anyway. I'm actually quite relieved that others do this too. I have no time in the morning during the week to do anything with my 'chids. I'm glad I confessed, it's been my "dirty little secret" but I've never had a problem with it. lol

I am a big fan of this "haven't had a problem yet" philosophy. I have taken this approach with both my orchids and my homebrewing. Of course I try to give the plants (and beer) the right conditions, but there are MANY ways of coming to the same end result.

I'm glad others have confessed that they are night waterers! I too, have emulated "night rain" every once and a while!

I think a lot of these misconceptions come from trying to replicate commercial operations. I know this holds true for homebrewing. People spend lots of time and money on set-ups that are essentially mini commercial operations, going through the same steps, just scaled down. Many times these "commercial" steps are not necessary for the hobbyist. You don't need a giant stove or a fancy mixer just to make a small batch of really tasty cookies! Mmmmm, cookies.

I often take the same approach with my 'chids in semi-hydro culture....I figured if the roots are always moist, what does it matter if I water in the morning, day, or evening if I don't splash water on the leaves!

I believe this idea got started when most orchids were grown in greenhouses. I wouldn't recommend watering a greenhouse late in the day. Especially watered from overhead. I normally try to water in morning cause it gets me going and helps wake me up. Something to do while sipping coffee. But If I have to go somewhere or just forget, I water all the plants (except mounts that get dunked) at night. I have fans blowing as well. Remember, lots of orchids don't like misting or wet leaves, so you'd want to keep them dry anyways.

had my sederiea for a month now and can't believe how fast the little stinker is growing. had just two new root nubbins and a new leaf starting when I got it, and now its got 3 decent roots wrapping around its mount, the leaf looks great and there is the start to another new leaf and a fourth root is just creeping out from between the plant and the cedar. too cool!

Ross, You are probably right. This is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Big operations are very different than most of our hobby set-ups. Their techniques are geared for their conditions, not ours.

Cowboy, Nice growing! Mine has put on some new growth too, but not as much as yours! Good job!
