Wow, that really is dark. Your last pic really shows off the dark wine hue you mentioned, Mauro.

There's a Max variabilis billed as "black" on eBay right now. While definitely dark, I wonder just how close to black that one happens to be -- the entire photo including the plant seems dark.

Paul, last year I saw a photograph of this M. variabilis taken by a friend who grows it. I remember that the flower really looked dark, almost black I'd say, but not the plant. I also saw here in Brazil a M. tenuifolia so dark that you hardly would say it wasn't black. Intriguing Maxillarias!!!
