Maxillaria uncata
This is for Patty!
I have to admit that when I came across this plant, I was surprised about its form. Up until I found this plant, the image I have had of Maxillaria was Max tenuifolia. I even sent the vendor a question verifying this plant is a Maxillary!

Hi Matt!
That is an awesome Maxillaria uncata, its huge! I felt the same way about Maxillaria, assumed they were all big plants. Al had a monstrous tenuifolia in bloom a year ago and it was an amazing plant but really big.
I found my uncata accidentally on eBay and was surprised at its size so I did a little research online and decided to buy it. My plant came from insituorchids, my first time purchasing from him. I was pleased with the transaction and the plant. My plant is still pretty small, it flowered about a week ago and the blooms were very pretty. The flowers remind me of Dendrobium torresae a bit. Here is my little one:
Thanks for posting your plant!

You have a great plant! Ironically, my plant came from insituorchids too! My plant bloomed all summer long, but the blooms were kind of hidden by the leaves. Growing yours in a pot helps open up the flowers to better view.

Thank you Matt, it seems healthy. I've noticed this plant is usually grown mounted but I like it potted so I've left it for now. Funny we both purchased from the same vendor. Was your plant mounted when you purchased it.
The flowers were easily seen though I completely missed the buds. I checked this plant frequently as it was newly acquired and I was hoping it would acclimate without any problems. One morning it was in bloom, I was surprised!

Hi Patty. The plant came mounted on this board. That was another reason for getting it because I'm out of shelf space, so I am hanging plants on walls.

A greenhouse would solve many work around a--that's for sure! I keep saying to myself "someday!" Or move to a place where winter lasts a month or two and not too cold and my orchids can stay outside ten months out of the year.

Maxillaria continues to bloom. Right now this plant has over 20 blooms throughout the plant. Here is one branch. It has four blooms.

Interesting, Pattywack's blooms seem to have more "shape' to them, the stripes are more visible. I have an uncata also, and the blooms look more like Matt's, not very open. They are shy.
