Picked up these Maxillaria's today at Pelican Coast Farms, the owner is awesome and even gave me a huge cutting of his Maxillaria Variabilis for free!!
These are all the plants I got!
Maxillaria Variabilis
Maxillaria Elatior, which has some awesome root growth.
Maxillaria Camaridii
If anyone has any culture advise please let me know!
I love Max. elatior, which bloomed nicely for me this year. Outside in summer in a shade structure, indoors in a sunny window in winter after the nights get cold, plenty of water. It will be a big plant--mine is over 2 feet tall easily.
Sorry for the rotated pic--I don't seem to be able to change that.
2 feet tall!! That's awesome, how long would you say you've had yours?
I've found that if you rotate the photo on your phone then rotate it back to normal prior to uploading it, it comes out normal. Works for me at least!
I bought it in Feb. 2016 at an orchid show. It grew a lot last year outdoors and bloomed in December. It was getting so big it was ungainly, so I cut a couple of the longest growths off when I repotted early this spring, and it is putting new growth out now. I put the cuttings in a pot with bark and am hoping they will root with regular watering; I've had good luck doing that with Max. tenuifolia.
How much would you say it's grown? Did you get it at a larger size?
Mine is just a division from the owners plant, I've heard this sucker grows really fast within a years time so I'm hoping mine does the same!
vvesto, the plant was about 1 1/2 ft tall when I bought it. I'd guess it grew a foot more, but the leaves are not upright, so it's hard to tell. I cut two pieces off to reduce the size to about what it was when I got it. I expect that it will repeat that performance as it is pushing new growth out from the top of several growths, but there are sprouts coming up from the bottom also. It is really a beast!
