Here's a picture of the spines. They aren't terribly long, but they are very sharp. And because your average orchid doesn't come equipped with them, it's easy to forget that they're there, which is a good way to come away with a little bloody reminder when you're messing around your plant collection that it's always a good idea to pay attention. :-)

The spines are definitely a hazard and getting "bit" by one is quite painful. I've pierced myself too many times. Of course, in nature, pit vipers like to nest in these plants so getting bit by one of those would be far worse.

Recently found out that the spines are for self-preservation. Animals who might try eating them find they're not so palatable and OUCH!

The blooms are gorgeous. I have never heard of an orchid having spines before. Will these plants ever stop fascinating me?
