Promenaea citrata - riddle

Many years ago I had a Promenaea citrata. It didn't do well for me and I no longer have it but I'm positive that that citrata was the name that came with it.

Finally, this plants has been confirmed to be Promenaea Meadow Gold (Prom. Limelight x Prom. xanthina) and the citrata in the label is a well stablished mistake. Currently, I am waiting for it to start opwning the buds I'll keep you posted...

I bought a Promenaea that was labeled Limelight x Meadow Gold at an EBay auction. I'm a newbie orchid hobbyist and I got hooked on a mini-fling of auctions. I fell in love with this little guy's pix and couldn't resist taking a flyer on it as an experiment. The grower's description seemed to say that it was pretty undemanding.

I haven't seen too much info on it, but there have been a few good discussions on Orchid Board and then your link....which is great!

I've had the plant since June '08 and it is putting up several new growths and new roots. Aside from a leaf or two that came with a small brown tip spot (which has not increased), the plant looks very happy and I'm hoping that it'll flower this coming summer.

Promenaeas are indeed very easy plants. Just avoid keeping the leaves wet while growing (I have foudn they are very sensible to rot - sometimes roting even if they are just in touch with the humid ceramic pot!) and do not give them too much light...

I should consider myself very lucky. I've been misting all the plants daily. Fortunately, I haven't had any problems resulting from water on the plant's leaves. I'll be more careful from now on. Yikes. Thanks for the advice.

for whatever it is worth I happened to have Bechtel & Cribb: Manual of Cultivated Orchid secies 1992 Edition open. They simply list Promenaea citrata as a synonym of Promenaea xanthina

The picture of xanthina was so lovely I became interested. By the way, named after Promencia, a priestess of Dodona mentioned by Herotodus

In the above book recommended culture is similar to what you stated. I quote:

Best grown in small pans under humid and fairly shady conditions. while growing they should not become dry but it is important not get water on young growth because they readily rot. When pseudobulbs are fully formed much less water is needed so long as shrivelling is avoided.
