Ida/Lycaste andreetae Male
Default Ida/Lycaste andreetae

It is a bit strange that this floriferous species has been neglected so long. It was described 200 years after its first collection by Ruiz and Pavon. It is known from Ecuador, but appearantly it has a wide range of distribution from Venezuela and Colombia to Peru.
I never noticed a scent, until recently I brought my plant to our local meeting. It was after sunset. Suddenly my car was filled with a hyacinth scent. Later that evening the judges gave me a silver medal.
You may notice the black front lobe of the lip. It turns black very soon after the flower opened.
