Maxillaria tenuifolia
Lovely scent of coconut oil from Maxillaria tenuifolia , wafting through my shade house this morning.
Reminded me of bath soap ...
But it beats the ‘big smelly flowers’ of Stapelia gigantea which I have growing at the entrance to my shade facility.

I have a baby mounted on a cedar plank...at least I think it's a baby...how big do the pbulbs get when mature enough to bloom? It's very pretty!

I've never seen one mounted, usually all in pots. I have 2 maxis in clay pots 3-4" blooming with small pbulbs. Just remembered I did have sev. on plaques but lost them I think due to not watering enuf. Yes,pretty!

Cute. I like the looks of things on mounts but this is what I am afraid of, not watering enough. It's very dry in Wyoming. I have enough problems with small pots.

I grow my tenuifolia in a wire basket with water retentive mix. I do not think they are suitable for pots.
I also live in a very dry environment here in Africa (we only have rain fall for 4 months in the year) but I keep all my mounted plants near auto misters in my shade house so that they don't get too dried out.
I think high humidity is the trick with successful mounted orchids.

Mature bulbs on mine are 4cm tall and about 2cm wide. But a better benchmark for blooming is the size of the plant. It seems that the plant generally needs to have growths with 3 levels of bulbs before being big enough to bloom. Though I know a few people that got blooms on plants a bit smaller than that.

What a beauty!
I've got two plants, one of them smells like Frosties!
