Max tenuifolia? have my doubtsl ... Male
Default Max tenuifolia? have my doubtsl ...

Keep forgetting to ask about this one. Got this one from a friend some years ago as Max. tenuifolia. However, the blooms are not quite right in appearance to any tenuifolia I have ever seen. Does have the expected coconut fragrance when blooming. Thought I recall someone mentioning that there is another max that has that same scent -- though I have zero recollection whether the plant they had mentioned was a species or hybrid. So here's an old photo of a flower of my plant.

Thoughts? ...

The flower looks exactly like a Maxillaria tenuifolia(texture, color and form=even the lip)....the bulbs and leaves also looks like it....and you said it has that distinctive coconut scent....then don't doubt it....it is!

here is my orchid plant:

Maxillaria tenuifolia

Matt's bulbs are longer and thinner....Paul's and my bulbs are oblong, fat and substantial....but all our flowers are alike.

Yes, but see the ones you all posted are much more open. Mine never progresses beyond the "cuppy" stage pictured in my post. Nor does mine get that rolling back along the sides of the sepals which is evident in Tarev's or Matt's which is also what I have always seen on the ones at shows. This has me curious as to whether mine is not what it seems or if it is a weird variant.

Do you think your different growing conditions could be part of the bloom not opening as much? It took my blooms a while before the (petals/sepals?) pulled back. How long are your blooms lasting? I don't think they are blasting, but maybe if the flower just isn't lasting long enough to open completely.
