Zygopetalum Bright Imagination - New Growth

The purpose of this thread is to document the growth of a recently acquired Zygopetalum hybrid, Bright Imagination.

Two small 'nubs' were revealed after peeling back dead tissue at the base of the newest pseudobulb. One of the nubs has begun to grow. Hopefully, it will mature and bloom.

Its progress will be tracked here, in photographs.

I created a similar thread with an Oncidium last year, but as I understand it, Zygos grow and flower in a different pattern than Oncs. I'm looking forward to seeing that difference firsthand.

The Oncidium took 5 months to go from tiny, new growth to complete formation of the pseudobulb, so I will assume the same for this plant. Who knows what surprises await, so pull up a chair, and feel free to share your Zygo stories

So far so good! Good idea too. I've had a Zygo for 3.5- 4 months now - Zygolum Rhein Moonlight - which suffered a bit during its travel to my abode but had 4 little new growths when it arrived. I accidentally killed one because it was brown and I thought it was dead, nope, (embarrassing), but the other three have continued to grow however slowly. I tried to find some pics that would more closely share their growth with you however I see now that I didn't properly document their growth but I can share a bit more later. So far the biggest of them - 4-5 inches, only half the size the growth that came in bud when I bought it - isn't anywhere near producing a spike. The bloomed growth lost its flower a couple months ago at least and only started forming it pbulb in the last month.

So good luck! I look forward to witnessing this with you and seeing the resultant plant & blooms! Zygos are pretty awesome, even from my limited experience, I would like to get more in the future.

Don't get me wrong, there has been significant growth and I did repot it about a month ago. It's been outside for several weeks now.

Thank you for posting this. I think that showing the growth progress will be very informative for anyone with little or no experience with zygo hybrids (like myself). I have a few noids from TJs and I haven't gotten them to rebloom. They get ignored, since I only have around 3.

May I ask where you got this plant/hybrid?

Well, I was a bit quick to the trigger there, and typing in the name I found Bright Imagination on Amazon. Funny typing Zygopetalum in search last night did not bring this guy up!!

Yes! If you look on the Amazon page you will see that it comes from The Orchid Gallery in Chattanooga TN, which is where I got this plant. Paid $16 + shipping.

This growth is just about two months old. Slow going, but it has thickened and lengthened nicely since the last update.

Notice also how the pseudobulb of the previous growth is starting to reveal itself.

Exciting! What do you think, flowers for Halloween? Am I being too ambitious?
