Much to my surprise I won best in class with this one on the weekend. Funny, I wasn't even going to bring it to the show....proves that you never really know....and when in doubt, take it. Thanks for looking.

You have beautiful display flowers. It is a healthy plant with clean leaves. The roots are going berserk all over the place....of course you get awarded....it is a large specimen

Very nice! I just got one at an orchid show in January and today I noticed that there are buds on it! What a surprise! (It is just a little one). My max. tenufolia also opened its first bloom so it must be max. time.

Can I ask what your culture is? I have heard that these dislike repotting...Do you find that to be true? Does the variablilis have any scent?

Thanks in advance!

Kathy

Thanks Bud and Kathy. Kathy I've only had my plant for about 2 years and it started out in a 2 inch pot. Not sure why, but thought it would look good mounted on wood so that is how I've grown it. So I spray once a day, soak/dunk once a week with fert. It gets a fair amount of light...it is under my roaming hp sodium light. It spends the summer outside in my arbor and enjoys our hot humid summers. Grows very quickly & a no fuss plant. No smell that I have ever detected. Good luck with yours, I'm sure you'll do well!

Thank you! That sounds do-able for me! (Guess I should have checked before I bought it, but I have done OK with the tenufolia so I wanted to try another one)

I don't have anything mounted...yet...and I just grow on my windowsills. I just bought some plant hangers so I am going to be putting more of my orchids out for the summer this year. Since this variabilis is still very small I might wait a bit before I put it outside, though.

BTW, I always enjoy your posts and pictures! Keep them coming, because they are a real help to learners like myself. You too...Bud!

If you can grow your tenu well, you will do fine with this one as well. This plant would also do well likely in a hanging basket, you just wouldn't water as much as if mounted. Post some pictures when its blooming!

Thank you. Funny, I consider myself a beginner, I've only been growing orchids for about 8 years or so. Killed my share that is for sure, but learned something just about everytime! Always lots to learn!!
