Hi Frederico!

I appreciate your comments re: Donato. Yes, you used the "old-fashioned" correctly. I have corresponded with him briefly while placing orders or asking about specific plants. I think that the family business is "old-fashioned" as evidenced by the use of "old-fashioned" labels for plants! It doesn't matter--I have purchased plants from Alvim & Donato since 1980!

I have also had a couple of mislabeled plants. I never worry. Seidel guarantees satisfaction. About 1990, I had a Vriesea hieroglyphica which arrived nearly dead. I wrote Alvim. He replied that it would be replaced in the next order--it was.

You wrote that you have botanist friends to consult. Perhaps, you can help. Seidel sells a "Zygopetalum jugosum". It isn't what I expected and Donato wasn't any help when I wrote back. The flower is similar to Z. mackayi/intermedium. It certainly isn't Pabstia jugosum which is what I really expected (and wanted!).

I have a Pabstia viridis from Seidel which just began two new leads! It was small at first; it is gradually getting larger. I look forward to seeing it flower!

I hope to see Brasilian vendors at the WOC in Miami in January!! I already know that Donato won't be there.

Wow, you are brave! Pabstia jugosa is demanding in cultivation! David Miller (US orchid lover who lives in Rio de Janeiro state) wrote an article about jugosa some years ago, I'll try to find the magazine. He wrotes also a book about Serra dos Órgãos and Atlantic rain forest (Orchids of the High Mountain Atlantic Rainforest in Southeastern Brazil, MILLER, D. / WARREN, R. - you can find in Orchids Books - Your place for Orchid Books, CDs & much more . EcoOrquídeas will go to 19th WOC, you can contact their about Pabstia and others (ecoorquideas. Sergio Gutfreund and Zayra will be travelling to Thailand next monday (to import orchids). Sergio is a very skilled man and for sure he will be able to find the 'correct' Pabstia for you! (marketing@ecoorquideas.com.br or zayratours@ecoorquideas.com.br)

Thanks for the references. I will borrow the Pabst book at my next orchid society meeting. I have seen it there. Perhaps, I will purchase the other book that you recommend from the Canadians if I don't spend money on plants in Miami!

I wrote EcoOrquideas. I am also interested in finding other difficult to locate species as well. I hope to establish a dialogue as the catalog is somewhat limited.

I really appreciate the references!
