I recently god about 10 of these as a gift, and I was wondering how to take care of them. They've already lost their leaf for summer, but haven't bloomed. Has anyone done this before?

I've grown this. It grows in leaf litter around limestone hills.

It likes it cold to cool. It is winter growing/summer dormant.

I've always been able to take it all the way through the growing season. But when dormancy period comes, I always lose them to either desiccation or rot.

They don't like a completely dry dormancy. The dormancy is occasionally moist.

Summer here is to warm for them. They like it cooler. So summer in a beverage or wine cooler is best.

Bright shade.

Yeah, I'm thinking of keeping them in nested terracotta pots with wet sand in between, to keep temps down. I will let you know how they fare over the summer.

Aplectrum hyemale is native here in NW Arkansas and more common than most of our native orchids (excepting Spiranthes, of course). But I wasn't aware it was available commercially. Someone (maybe Troy Meyers?) told me that it was very difficult to germinate. Are there good commercial sources?

Thanks,

Steve

I think the person I got them from cultivates them vegetatively in a shade garden, based on the quantities they offer on eBay, and the other plants they sell.
