I'm sure you would've anticipated me saying this, but -

I recommend you not touching the Dichaea glauca. Leave it alone with the algae. Don't risk setting it back right now.

Thanks for the heads-up, Philip !
I am really bothered by algae but I am not going to jeopeardize my growing plant(I am not repotting nor disturbing any of its large roots)....its maybe co-existing with the algae because it is giving me lots of basal keikis.

Your basal keikis are new growths which eventually become the tall canes. It is typical of the cane to lose the leaves as the canes get taller and each leaf juncture produces a bloom.

Eventually I remove the entire cane even if the cane could still produce a few blooms. To my eyes the very tall canes with a few leaves on top are ugly. You have the new growths getting bigger and blooming every year, why look at ugly.

The blue coloration is actually a wax to protect it from heat.

You can use Physan to kill the algae or put it into another pot. I use a clay pot for stability of a tall plant. I haven't found the Dichea to be overly picky about root disturbance.

Enjoy your new 'chid!

Brooke

Default REBLOOM!!!! 06/01/2013

On this blooming cycle, I have bigger flowers and more keikis forming robust roots....maybe I will repot when the blooms are gone. The fragrance is even stronger as ever....

* the tallest is 22 inches

* I counted 8 new keikis and the new growths last year are halfway reaching the tall other leaves.

Congratulations!

I just had to divide mine, clean it up, and repot it recently. The potting mix had gone downhill, and so was the plant.

Thankfully I caught the problem in time!

Good growing.

Thank You, Philip!!!!
I followed your advice to leave it alone and it gave me more little canes and robust roots....I think it is living well with algae in my environment....I have found an 8" diameter, a foot tall glass vase to repot it in....

Thanks for the pictures and culture info, Bud (and Philip) - I've had a plant of this for about a year which has so far failed to die, but also failed to flower, so I appreciate the information.

Congrats on the reflowering, Bud, and nice pictures too!

Steve
