Zygopetalum Louisendorf, possible spike? Male
Default Zygopetalum Louisendorf, possible spike?

I just discovered this new "growth". From the place it is growing I don't think it's a leaf. What do you guys think, could this be a spike? It would be the first time it spikes with me. I bought it with one flowering spike and a second spike with buds, but unfortunately I broke the second spike. I hope you agree with me and confirm it's a spike.

Yeah, I know time will tell, but when it comes to orchids, I'm sooooo impatient. Everything goes sooooo slow (well not everything; deseases, rootrot, etc. goes very fast).

Hahaha, so true! Funny how quickly things can sneak up on you. For a while I have tried not to use chemicals and I was just using a soap solution weekly to control thrips and mites... 2 days after I soaked everything in soap thrips took a toll on many of my Vanda orchids' roots, and mites or thrips or something sand blasted the leaves of one of my Vandas. Along with a little black rot on Encyclias and crown rot on an Ascocentrum, that was seriously the last straw for me. So I got heavy duty with Orthene (insecticide), Dithane (topical fungicide for soft rot and crown rot) and Thymol (systemic fungicide for leaf spotting fungi). So far, 3 weeks in with LOTS of rain, no rot, no fungus, and no bug damage. Whew!

I think it's clearer now it's a spike, don't you agree?
It's the first time a Zygo spikes with me, so I had my doubts at first, but now I'm quite sure it's a spike.

It sure looks like a spike! Congrats! I am still waiting on mine.... It has another new growth about 2 inches tall and I am hoping it will spike eventually. I thought they came from outside the leaves. But if my eyes are not deceiving me, yours is within the outer leaves much like most oncidiums?

Any tips on getting it to spike?

Lots of patience, Silken. I discovered on February 25th that a new growth was growing. Just recently the spike has started to show. This new growth must be about 8 inches high now. I've done nothing special, though. I've had it outside some time, but now it's way too hot outside I think. Why don't you post a picture so we can see your plant?
